Introduction

Piedmont wine tasting sponsored by Specs Austin led by Evan Davis their local wine educator. Evan gave a detailed presentation of the Piedmont Region, which highlighted the main grape varieties, major production areas (DOC and DOCGs), climatic and geographical influences, production methodologies and MGAs.

  • 2021 Tenuta Roletto Erbaluce di Caluso 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Erbaluce di Caluso

    Wine tasting sample. Smokey and flinty aromatics followed with orchard and stone fruits with some waxy notes. Better fruit presence on the palate. Medium plus acidity provides balance. Great balance of minerals, fruits and acidity. Long finish. Very good.

  • 2021 Fratelli Revello Barbera d'Alba 88 Points

    Tasting sample at a wine tasting event. Bright, deep ruby color. Very jammy and fruity aromatics and flavors. Strawberry preserves and raspberry compote. Fairly simplistic approach. Medium acidity struggles to provide balance for the overwhelming fruits. Medium finish.

    Enjoyed at a tasting event. Slightly shy aromatics. Cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. Very easy drinking but also somewhat simplistic, very little in the way of complexity. Great inexpensive porch pounder.

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting event. Single Vineyard, 70 year old vines of Grignolino in the Teruggia area. Floral and cherry notes but fairly non-descript and not very memorable.

This flight highlighted the Nebbiolo grape made primarily in the Barbaresco Region but also the greater Langhe. The focus covered both the delimited area, vineyards and production methods

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting event. Pale garnet color. Youthful aromas and flavors. Red fruits and earthiness dominate the flavor profile with tannin and acidity looking for equilibrium. Long dry finish. Needs serious food at this juncture.

    Enjoyed at wine tasting. Pale garnet color. Quite approachable and ready to drink. Profile shows a plethora of red fruits, minerality and earthiness. In development with structure still looking for balance, but the fruits are there. Long finish. Enjoy with food.

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting. Pale garnet. Vegetal and earthy nose underscored with cherry and raspberry. Youthful. Fierce tannin with lots of acidity. Fruits in the background. Too early. Hold until 2027.

This flight highlighted the Nebbiolo grape made primarily in the Barolo Region. The focus covered the delimited area, vineyards, production methods, and contrasted these factors with those of the Barbaresco Region.

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting. Pale garnet color. Persistent aroma and flavors led by roses, tar, and a wide range of red fruits. Big mouthfeel, expressive and developing but very drinkable. Love the approach and style. Big finish. Could use some additional bottle age. Requires food.

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting. Pale garnet. Persistent aromas and flavors of roses, tar and expressive red fruits. Developing. Deep and slightly austere mouthfeel. Showing balance at a relatively young age. Powerful and a bit austere. Big finish. Can drink now but will improve with further aging. Excellent.

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting. Pale garnet. Grapes come from the La Morra area. Still early on this; should only improve with further cellaring. Very aromatic. Expressive, balanced with finesse. Lots of red fruits. Strong finish.

    Enjoyed at a wine tasting. Shows a pale garnet hue. Aromatic, complex and balanced. Really a beautiful wine. Made in a very modern and approachable style. Probably the best wine of tonights lineup. Excellent.

Closing

This was a very educational and informative "tasting event". There was a large attendance of approximately 60 people, all who walked away with a a greater appreciation and knowledge base of this famous and renowned region.
