A pale, almost waterwhite colour with faint flinty aromas and subtle fruit undertones - quite grapy - of finger lime and Granny Smith apple. The palate is skinny and somewhat acidic, reminiscent of a young Colombard, but with just enough fruit to keep it on track and a gentle phenolic grip on exit. Riesling grapes are sourced from Elgin.
A light to mid yellow with distinctive savoury notes of crushed nuts, toffee and lactones with a touch of cider apples, stewed fruits and oxidised pear. The entry has a phenolic grip accompanied by crunchy apple flavours, lemon and sharp minerals/chopped stones similar to a qvevri-style wine, On the back palate, a subtle note of rooibos honey emerges, characteristic of the natural wine style. However, there was a nagging feeling that there was some sotolon, too. The finish is a bit phenolic. Unconventional! Sauvignon Blanc grapes are made using 60% skin fermentation and 40% barrel fermentation.
A light to mid lemon, with expressive aromas of dried pear and apple, quince, lemon, raisins, and curry rice underwhich lurks a terpene, rubber quality and some light lanolin qualities. The wine emphasizes mineral and a crunchy acidity that gives some tightness to the mid-palate whilst coupling with profuse fleshy fruit flavours of dried pear, yellow apple and creamy lees (yet with minimal oak influence). Concentrated with a savoury, salty twist to the finish, while not exceedingly long, it pleasantly delights. A blend of 39% Chardonnay, 24% Viognier, 18.5% Grenache Blanc, 11.5% Chenin Blanc (Steen), and 7% Verdelho.
A light lemon hue with mineral aromas comparable to a drystone wall and flint, accompanied by hints of dried pear, smoke, blue cheese and tonka wood. The wine has a lovely fleshy fruit of sweet apple, Poire William, blanched almonds and raspbery coulis within a tightly wound frame. The Williams pear seems to morph to a more eau de vie and then to a more fynbos-flavoured artisanal gin. A fairly long finish with a tad of confectionery sweetness on the back palate, yet with a touch of bitter/mineral pithy too. Sourced from a dry-farmed, old KWV block planted in Stellenbosch during the 1980s, this Chenin Blanc was made without botrytis. Hoeksteen is the Afrikaans for cornerstone. Cool ferment for three weeks in French oak barrels, followed by 13 months of aging sur lie.
A light to mid ruby red colour with lifted notes of ripe red plum, raspberry and sweet bruised apple with a smattering of cloves and cinnamon underscored by smoky wood elements that lent itself to a braai’d fruit character. Round on entry, the wine has a creamy texture supported by lively acidity and a subtle wood element. Raspberry and red pear join cranberry, and while the wine is enjoyable, it displays a slight phenolic note on the finish. Fledge & Co. is known for its natural winemaking approach, which focuses on minimal intervention.
A bright light to mid-ruby with aromas of stewed red berries and a touch of boysenberry that goes to pomace and then to edges of volatility. Rather sinewy and lean, the wine has a firm texture accompanied by noticeable alcohol warmth that detracts somewhat. Then, a rather phenolic, almost green element emerges, running to a noted extracted tannins in which little fruit resides. It is rather angular and drying.
