Introduction

First of all i would like to thank the organizers for this beautifull event! and then the staff who were unintrusive and helpfull. The food was delicious (and more than plentifull!) and the company was amazing. wonderfull Friday night!

I was very happ to have a chance to meet all the people - so many of whom i know only from the Board. This board - as i have said before - trully has altered my life and gave me the opportunity to meet such nice and EXTRMELY generous people. thanks. Special thanks to Roy Mitch Karen and Christine for forsing us, New Yorkers to get together :)

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Apertiff - i really dont understand why they chose this wine to pour...i guess people dont really know what to do with VT alsacians... oh well.

  • 1995 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg Vendange Tardive 95 Points

    France, Alsace

    WOW botrytis nose - heavy in apricotes and already you can feel the acidity - delicous sweet nose.
    the palate started off heavy and overly sweet (especially an an apertif!!) but with time (i kept it for an hour or so) it developed marvelously and became drier and more balanced. this has a decade ahead of it easily - and is still desert wine at this point but what a desert wine. rich rich layers on the palate - buttery and creamy with spicy overtones - i'd love to try this with a mango desert. no angles and a loooong finish.

Whites - served with appetizer. I had the spicy shrimp with mango and avacado which were DELICIOUS! almoust indian-food overtones

Flight 3 (1 Note)

this was out apertiff - but it was being chilled... onthe other hand this went really well with the food..i am really starting to understand this champagne thing :)

    from a Magnum. This is yummy from the start. nose full of apple and yeast. the palate follows accordingly. Beautiful long finish and the wine continued to evolve in the glass. has a long future ahead of it. with champagnes like this one i am starting to like the bubley :)

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

pasta with braised shortribs (more like shortrib sauce) but it was lovely. the meaty sauce trully had a punch!

  • 1990 Pierre Bourée Fils Chambertin 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    earth and mushrooms. red berries hiding on the palate. long finish with some pleasant tartness. Very rustic - and thats how i would prefer it. good mature burgundy - not sure if it has anywhere further to go but its delicious now. balanced and resolved.

  • 1993 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin

    no notes. i remember it being a bit off, lots of tar and barolo-like but lacking something. this was the weakest wine in the burgundy flight for me.

  • 1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 91 Points

    lots of fruit - this need way more time. the opposite of the Bouree. more modern style and much more oppulent. good balance and will probably develop much more with time. i prefer the rustic burgundy though.

Flight 5 - FLIGHT OF THE NIGHT! (4 Notes)

    WOW right from the bottle this was clicking! rich powerfull tannic wine with tons of chocolate and leather notes. body is spicy and alive - its just rushes through you! I love this wine!!

  • 1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 89 Points

    sadly this was outclassed by the 2 1990's and thus was hard to judge. it may also have been a bit off since the nose was barely showing. basic and a bit thin. lacking the power one would expect from the producer. Good food wine but was lost in this flight.

    again - lost because of the 2 1990's. this showed nice mature flavors, good backbone and lots of leather and spice. lovely wine especialy with food but did not stand up to the competition.

    WOW. WOTN for me. but it took time. off the bat it was not as impressive as the beaucastel and too many gave up on it. but with time (and i mean 1-2 hours) it continued to evolve and develop. this is not something i expected from a Rhone - with my limited exp i would have picked this for a Burgundy. sweet nose thats light and bordering on truffles. the body is soft - this wine slips down your palate leaving traces of gems and complex layers. this is truly a great wine. need much more time till it peaks.

the lamb that i ordered was well prepared, rare but soft and creamy. the beets were perfect! (yes i know ...russians love beats but these were REALLY well prepared)

    this is better.... much better...i didnt love this in the begining but (and this is one of the times i wanted a bigger pour) after taking a bit more into my mouth the wine truly showed its class. soft resolved tannins. red fruit . delicious claret just not a blockbuster (this will be a theme...)

    i like leovilles overall. this shows why - although the fruit was somewhat lacking the structure and the backbone was impressive. this wine shows class and thus trully is a good wine. some currants hiding but mostly it was a good nose and a clean well structured body.

the cheese plate was to die for. Brillat-Savarin was pure heaven.
well matched with the wines (to my surprise!)

    my bordeaux of the night. still very young and needed 30+minutes in the glass to open up and the alcoholic streak to leave. lots of fruit and power here. just beutifull - maybe be even better in a few years when the tannins fully resolve themselves.

the deserts were HUGE... well the crumble was at least...by this poin i could barely breathe and thus only picked at it but it was very very good

    the wine was red...way too early for it to be that color. it had to be off...little sweetness left - and a bit sour on the finish. i am no expert but to me this was off.

    i wan to thank paul for bringing this and warn other from doing the same. tooooooo young. fat and yet well balanced but currently tropical and primary - like a decent but not great eiswein BUT this shows its potential in the finish...also this is closing...it was less giving with some time and trully is not ready...and wont be for a LOOONG time...glad i have some of this though...
