A year later, we are back again with a springtime tasting of rosé wines. This time we decided to stick to France and still wines only. Of course, we had a big-brand representative of Provence: Whispering Angel itself. I then made sure to include both a Tavel and a Bandol to show some "more serious" rosé. On the contrary we concluded with Bourgrier's Rosé d'Anjou as I find it a delightfully quaffable wine and a crowd pleaser.
I, once again, did not like the Whispering Angel. I am curious, however, if this might be due to light strike because the off-putting notes that I disliked fall in line with that very easily. Tavel and Bandol were received with a surprising enthusiasm and of course, everyone loved the Rosé d'Anjou. I also rated it highly, but I genuinely find it very well balanced and pleasing.
2023 Caves d'Esclans Whispering Angel 83 Points
France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
As before, I don’t really like Whispering Angel. Idk if the bottle could have been light stricken.
Smells of grapefruit and strawberry toothpaste. Lemongrass and some minerality. The nose is alright.
The palate is what I don’t like. It’s medium bodied with a little bit of sugar. Medium acidity. Sage, cheese, and cherry.
Medium finish with grapefruit rind.
7+/18

Smells of fresh earth, a little leather but mostly grapefruit, raspberry and pronounced red currant.
On the palate, it’s dry and a little bitter. Medium acidity and body. Cowberry and red currant. Earth.
Medium+ finish with fresh tobacco.

2023 Gabriel Meffre Tavel Saint Ferréol 83 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel
On the nose, there are lemons, pizza dough, sour cherry, and just a touch of banana. White pepper.
On the palate, it’s medium bodied with probably a few grams of RS. Medium acidity. Cherry, red gummy candy, grapefruit and lemons. Maybe a little paprika.
Medium finish.

2023 Famille Bougrier Rosé d'Anjou 85 Points
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Rosé d'Anjou
Very pale in colour.
Smells of grapefruit, oil, and white flowers. Banana
Off-dry on the palate with medium+ acidity. Rose, strawberry and banana.
Medium finish.
8-/18, which might be a high rating in the context of the tasting but it has a good balance. It also doesn’t have any off putting aromas or flavours like some of the other wines.
