Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1969 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 89 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

The winner vintage was 1970 (95), no. 2 1998 (92+) and no. 3 2006 (92). 4 out of 15 bottles were faulty but no correlation between age and faulty. Many of the vintages had powerful coffee notes (a little like the Dom Perignon trigger...)

    This flight:
    - 1969: Garnet color. Notes of mint, eucalyptus and a lot of coffee. Medium+ acidity, medium tannin, high alc., full body. 89
    - 1987: Garnet color. Seems too developed for me. Much too much tertiary farmyard aromas. High acidity and high tannin. 85
    - 1998: Now we are talking. Clearly the youngest but nice balance betwen primary, scondary and tertiary notes. High acidity, tannin and alcohol. Full bodied. 92+

    - 1966: Faulty

2 out of three flawed so we added 2 Valbuena vintages:
    - 2018: Of course clearly less concentarted than Unico. Red fruit, eucalyptus and coffee. Medium+ acidity, high tannin and alc. Full body. Too young. Performance right now 80.
    - 1979: Clearly less concentarted than Unico. Too developed for me - too much farmyard notes. Medium acidity. High tannin - pretty impressive after so many years for a second wine. 85
