Introduction

I was extremely lucky to get the opportunity to attend the huge En Primeur tasting at Ulysse Cazabonne as well as being looked after by the charming Jean de Lassee.

After the reported challenges of the vintage I was excited to be able to experience a deep dive into the vintage. Just a quick note; the wines were pretty much served at cellar temperature - so more 17 C which may have impacted the tasting slightly; pushing the tannins.

Flight 1 - En Primeur tasting (148 Notes)

Fronsac - struggling for ripeness and generosity; more reminiscent of 2013 than 2021

St Emilion - Lean, lacking in generosity and characteristic breadth, a few exceptions but best avoided unless operating at the top end or really cherry-picking at the lower end. Worth noting that lots of these had an underlying herbaceous quality.

Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol - Again a lack of breadth but more fruit generosity here - both black and red - and a homogeneity across some wines though there were some poor showings as well. This was the first bracket that provided any promise but we're ascending the heights of 2021 rather than anything beyond that. Less herbaceous and green than the St Emilion

Pessac-Léognan and Graves - Darker fruit nose but red fruit palate, a little more balance though judicious choice required. Again, the greenness was present here as well though less intrusive. Some producers went with far lower extraction and this certainly helped in the attempt to avoid those green tannins and the slightly sharp acidity; not sure if all of these wines have fully got through Malo as well (this comment applies mostly to the left bank wines in general) though I can't believe that they haven't

Listrac, Moulis, Haut-Médoc - a tough vintage for those AOCs; the best show some dark hued fruit but all show plenty of methoxypyrazine and herbaceous notes. The worked wines all had hard green tannins and there was an overabundance of acidity (see malo comment)

Margaux - like Pomerol on the right bank there was a little more homogeneity here and, pleasingly, generosity and balance. Promising, some darker and red hued fruits in the ascendancy and nicely handled. Oak managed well in some cases, less obviously herbaceous

St Julien - Approach with caution, the most variable, plenty of green notes, the lesser of the four based on today's tasting - more akin to what was happening in St Emilion. This is usually my happy hunting ground with lots of producers who I depend upon and enjoy but this was hard work. I'm sad to say I didn't try anything that I could recommend from this village today

Pauillac - Fruit present but all with a sizeable green underpin which is, fortunately, restricted to the hardness of the tannins. Random promise here but not as good as Margaux.

St-Estèphe - dark hued fruits married to rustic tannins with a green underpin was the order of the day. Some wines were leaning into those tough tannins (Lillian Ladouys & Lafon Rochet)
