Commanderie de Bordeaux: Spring Parlement - Chateau Lynch-Bages

This was the Spring Parlement of the MN Chapter of the CdB. We had a group of 30 at Spoon and Stable to induct new members and explore examples of Lynch Bages from six decades. A very fun and enlightening evening.

• 2012 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  Light salmon color. Drank a glass plus over 45 minutes. This was quite steely and taut, mineral driven with dried strawberry, more subtle cherry notes, fresh and elegant with plenty of chalk and saline on the back end. This was already vivid and engaging which isn't always the case with younger vintage of CES. Very enjoyable, a wine to sit and reflect upon.

• 2022 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages 94 Points

  France, Bordeaux

  Pale gold color. Oh my, this is simply delightly. The nose is compelling immediately; offering a complex array of grapefruit, apple, and orchard fruits, with a lovely acacia floral element, lanolin and a little vitamin note too. The palate is lively, quite crisp and refreshing, adding lemon peel and Meyer lemon to the complexity noted on the nose. I love the minerality as well. This was a real classy effort and one that ishighly recommended. 94+(+)pts.

• 1967 Château Lynch-Bages

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Medium-dark red color with moderate bricking. Double decanted for sediment only. Followed a glass over 2.5 hours. This was hanging on by a thread for the most part. It had that old madeirizing character to it. Not gone, but largely on life support. Celery salt, sour cherry, stewy, tomato jam, olive paste, barely medium bodied. Became much more vegetal after the first hour. More a science experiment than anything else. No score, gut impression would be mid 70's.

• 1978 Château Lynch-Bages Flawed

  Unfortunately one of the three bottles was corked. You could see this had some nice character, and those that got the intact bottles enjoyed it.

• 1983 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Dark red color. Double decanted and recorked. Drank a glass over 2.5hrs. The nose starts off with cigar, then pencil, and has boysenberry and cassis fruits with a little floral note and a streak of dill weed. The palate is quite elegant in the frame of the vintage, tart fruits cassis, a little blue infused as well, dill, cherry, a little weedy, dusty minerality, fairly fine tannins. Always a nice wine. 92 to 92+pts.

• 1996 Château Lynch-Bages 94 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red color. Double decanted and recorked. Drank a glass over 2.5hrs. Plenty of pretty fruit on the nose and palate, nice structure, not overly tannic. Cassis, black cherry, tobacco leaf, underbrush, damp earth, pencil, nice depth and round tannins. The nose really blew up on this an hour into drinking and the palate was even more lively. This was the class of the night.

• 1986 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red color. Double decanted and recorked. Drank a glass over 1.5 hours. There's a lots of earthiness on the nose, dried forest floor notes, dark fruits and iron on the nose. The palate really shows the minerality with iodone and iron, dry earth, more brooding dark fruits, firm yet largely accessable tannins. I thought this started off quite well, but really seemed to fall off, particularly the nose. 92+pts.

• 2005 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and recorked. Drank a glass over 1.5 hours. Black fruits, green pepper, freshly honed number 3 pencil, cassis, black cherry, and wood. The palate has slightly sour black fruits, black cherry, ripe and concentrated, cassis, plenty of oak, and a host of firm tannins. I will say this was a better showing than the half bottle we were given at Cordeillan-Bages last Fall. 91+ to 92pts.

• 2016 Château Lynch-Bages

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Chunky, dense, blackberry, ultra dark bitter chocolate, wood, green, lots of fruit. People were generally excited about this tonight. I didn't really find it engaging as it was though. I'm sure it will be great down the road someday. No score for now (gut for today is 91pts).

• 2009 Château Suduiraut 95 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  Medium golden color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes, from magnum. Velvety and succulent, fleshy ripe peach, pineapple, tangerine, honey, great acidity, orange rind, nice spice, quite vibrant and really long. This ended up a bit warm on serving by the end of the night. 94+ to 95pts.
