Introduction

Virtual tasting with Sarah Crowe and Jane Faulkner.

Covid brought many changes to the way that many of us live and work. In this instance, with the state of Victoria still/back in lockdown, Yarra Yering organised a guided virtual tasting to enable the tasting of their new release wines from the comfort of everyone's home. Wines were sent in advance, in 60mL plastic screwcapped bottles.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Chardonnay

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    60ml tasting pours.
    Very pale colour.

    Toasty stone fruit and lemon.

Quite reserved flavours on the juicy palate with stone fruit and flinty elements. Firm acidity and a chalky texture. Strong, clean, length.

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

60mL tasting bottle. Vibrant dark fuchsia.

Initial reduction blows off to reveal a vibrant and expressive nose of sweet cherry, violet, earth, leafiness, and a smoky top note.
The palate is juicy with some slightly grainy tannins and a sappy, drying finish of very good length. Drink now to 10 years.

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Shiraz Underhill

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

60mL tasting bottle. Dark, opaque purple-red.

Fragrant nose displaying vibrant purple fruit, forest floor, raspberry, and a floral character.
Tight and controlled with grippy tannins, carrying the palate long.
More expressive on the nose than the palate at this stage. Drink over the next 10 years.

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°2

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    60mL tasting bottle. 96% Shiraz, 3% Mataro, 1% Viognier. Deep, beautiful purple-red.

Funky, complex and savoury nose with black cherry, licorice, stalk influence, oak staves, cinnamon, apricot, VA/formic acid and plum.
Mid-weight and with very fine, chalky tannins and a long finish.
Beautifully balanced, and a surprise packet for me in this tasting lineup. Not far behind the #1.

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Cabernet Malbec Agincourt

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

60mL tasting bottle. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Malbec. Slightly transparent, dark fuchsia.

Nutty, leafy, blackcurrant, violet, tobacco and plum.
Gentle and refined, juicy palate. Very fine tannins. A rather simple wine in this lineup, lacking some depth presently, however I’d like to see this with some more age.

  • 2020 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°1

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

60mL tasting bottle. Dense, dark fuchsia.

Gentle on the nose but with harnessed power on the palate. Deep, spicy, and dark fruited with blackcurrant, cherry, toasted spices, bay leaf.
Showing some new oak influence on the palate, with a gentle floral lift on the finish. Cellar for 12-15 years. Lovely Cabernet.

Closing

While I was skeptical about whether the small plastic bottles would allow the wines to show their best, I'd say that the testing was an overwhelming success and it achieved its objectives.

While this type of tasting can't replace the face to face tastings at the cellar door, I'd love wineries to do offer this sort of thing more often for out-of-state customers that won't have a chance to visit the CD.
