Bordeaux, CA Pinot and Couple of Others

Introduction

This was a last minute offline with no theme that came together beautifully. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark Golodetz and Guillaume Deschamps, the duck was fantastic as usual, we had a Michel sighting and good wine and company all around. A pleasure to see you all.

There were seven of us and 14 wines on the table at one point. Two we didn't open, one so badly corked Jay and Jay forbade the rest of us to taste it and one I'm missing. Here are some brief impressions. Hope the others will fill in.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Huet Vouvray Pétillant Brut

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant

    I learned that petillant means "bubbly" but there were no bubbles here. I'll never understand these French wines. :) Acidic, clean, light, bright yellow in color. Not totally lacking fruit. Okay, but not repeat for me.

  • 2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Truffière

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Clear bright gold color, buttery, not obviously French. Okay but between this and the Huet, I'd take the Huet if I were going French white. I don't care for the butter.

  • 2007 Dry Stack Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Rosemary's Block Dry Stack Vineyard

    I've had this a number of times this summer and continue to love it. Tonight it was slightly less crisp than the times before but the sweet grapefruit was present as were nectarines, which I don't remember finding as readily the times before. I really like it. I'm a buyer for 2008.

  • 2007 Dashe Cellars Zinfandel Les Enfants Terribles McFadden Farm

    This was served blind and that's always fun. No one had a confident guess as to what it could be. When it was revealed, we were all shocked it was a zin. Nothing at all like the CA Zin I know and love. Jay says this is organic and done in "fudra" (sp?). May I humbly suggest Dashe go back to regular sized young oaky barrels?! Not for me at all. Clipped finish with lots of acetone on the finish. Based on CT, I am assuming it was 2007, but Jay will have to confirm.

  • 1993 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    I know I was in the minority on this, but I didn't care for this at all. I thought it smelled dirt-y, I got a whiff of dishwater, which I've never smelled in a wine before. Let the flames begin.

  • 2006 Road 31 Wine Co. Pinot Noir Flawed

    I don't know what was wrong, but this was off. I brought one to a tasting a month ago and it was fine. Sorry guys. I have one more left.

  • 2000 DuMOL Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

    Nice bottle, big sweet fruit. I thought the finish was slightly off, but the wine was enjoyable.

  • 2003 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard

    This was great. Right up my alley. Other notes say that earlier this year, this was an alcoholic mess. Not anymore. Lots of fruit, the alcohol wasn't out of whack at all. Thanks for this, Steve.

  • 1966 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    This is the oldest wine I've ever had. Thanks to Mark for bringing this. I found it soft and delicate on the palate, but the nose showed almost nothing. As it opened up, there was some leather and a little mushroom on the palette as well. Not for me, but I could see what others liked about it.

  • 1989 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Ben brought this. He hoped to introduce me to a bordeaux that I'd like and he succeeded! This was my number two WOTN. Very light and earthy on the nose (not a lot of earth, mind you) with fruit and some alcohol on the palate. My notes fail me here, but I went back for seconds. This was tasty.

Closing

This was loads of fun. Guillaume taught me that I can accurately "class up" my bordeaux notes with the descriptors, leather, tobacco and "sous bois". Look for the overuse of these terms shortly. :)
