The third AWFS event that Paul and I got together to organise. This is the first white wine only event that I have attended because most of the time people just don't take whites seriously enough. • 2002 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 84 Points

  Germany, Rheingau

  Floral on the nose but with nice smoke and some petroleum peeking through. Thought I detected some oak. Pretty and sweet white fruit flavours finishing off with detectable residual sugars and lingering minerality. Good but residual sugars prove a dash too cloying for my liking.

• 2002 Domaine Ernest Burn Pinot Gris Goldert Clos Saint Imer La Chapelle 89 Points

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  Beautiful golden chrysanthemum yellow.My favourite wine of the night. A complex and sweet bouquet of canned lychees/rambutans and honeysuckle. A classy effort with sun-baked tropical fruits and golden sultanas lifted by a bright twang of orange peels. The finish, although sweel with a teaspoon of residual sugar, is refreshingly clean and lingers on with profound minerality that carries through from the mid to finish, forming most of its structure. This has excellent depth and length and is a good example of balance. Lovely.

• 2004 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine 84 Points

  France, Alsace

  Focused effort with good freshness and perfumed flowers bordering the sweetness of cannned lychees. Some kerosene appears after a while. The palate has pleasant white fruits and melons. Good balance and structure.

Fresh mouthwatering young wines

• 2006 Alain Paret Condrieu Lys de Volan 78 Points

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

  Very explosive nose of flowers to chemical insecticide reminiscent of baygon. Smokey and over-oaked. Bitter almond skins show through on the palate with a lack of acidity and fruits. Extremely dry.

• 2007 Garbin Estate Verdelho 82 Points

  Australia, Western Australia, Greater Perth, Swan Valley

  Good aromas of melons and pear. A very easily enjoyable wine displaying fresh grapefruits and white stonefruit sweetness that is all natural without the fakey fake sweetness dominant in many new world whites. Rounded and gentle but not at all hollow, the approach is even-handed.

Slightly aged whites

• 2002 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Stevens 84 Points

  Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

  An expressive nose resembling a burgundy that had many of us guessing mersault. Nutty and oaky toastiness infused with good "ass" factor that shouts burgundy! Good balance of lemon acidity, fresh grassiness, glowing golden fruits and structure , fiinishing with a pinch of minerality.

• 2001 Wieninger Grüner Veltliner Herrnholz 85 Points

  Austria, Wien

  Lovely golden yellow. An aroma garden of pandan leaves, dessicated coconut, rich half-baked almonds and hot wet stones. Rich, concentrated and focused on the palate with flinty action. Nice depth and warm mouthfeel with limey minerality streaming through the almost oily lush texture. A good example of the ageability of gruners.

Aged chardonnays and finished with a Sweet

• 2000 Louis Lequin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 86 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

  A textbook expression of burgundy. White flowers line a path of buttery oak strewn with early mornning dew. Although predominantly old-worldish, hints of new world stylistics seem to surface with interesting fresh citrus fruits dressed in creamy butteriness. Delectable.

• 2001 Kooyong Chardonnay Faultline 80 Points

  Good on the nose with textbook burgundian stylistics. White fruits and white flowers and some burg "ass" factor showing. Decent effort with good enough acidity and structure. Althought the palate does melt down with lack of character.

  Some flowers and sweet frutis. Rather simplistic. The palate is rather thin with lack of sugars to complement its acidity. Seems to finish with bitterness that throws me off.
