A look at Cote Rotie through the eyes of a few producers in which we centre on Domaine Jasmin.

• 2001 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie 87 Points

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

  (Tasted Blind) It is medium garnet red. Its bouquet consists of iodine, black plum, leather, red currants, and a hint of spice and pepper.
  A medium to full-bodied wine with a powdery texture, featuring some green, sticky notes set against lively acidity. Rather old-fashioned, with sinewy, mouth-coating tannins that rise towards the close, finishes medium too long. It's not a top vintage.

  (Tasted Blind) Deep ruby-purple. A riper, fruitier nose with violets, black plum, pencil lead and blackberry.
  The palate feels intense, modern with an opulent entry, lovely creamy satiny texture and sweeter but firm tannins - ripe vintage - and excellent concentration. Some notes of roasted meat accompany blackberry and plum, extending to a long finish.

  (Tasted Blind) Medium to dark garnet. A little pong at first, then slowly reveals leather, iodine, black plum, and iron bru. A riper palate entry with gravelly tannins suggests a warmer year, and there are some secondary elements of coffee grinds and a lick of vanilla. It has a nice firm structure with bright acidity; there is a little more elegance and freshness here.

  (Tasted Blind) Mid garnet quickly edges to a browning rim.
  Noted VA with hung game and red berries. With a ripe palate entry, the wine is intense with fresh acidity and a powdery texture. Flavours of game, blood, and iron oxide give a more ferruginous quality. However, the wine becomes firm, culminating in a slightly bitter finish. It seemed cleaner and not Bretty, but perhaps it was just showing some issues. It lacked depth.

  (Tasted Blind) Mid garnet. This time, there is a hint of reduction and pong before stewed plum, hung game, bilberries, and red berries arrive.
  Ripe fruits again, with a subtle VA quality. The alcohol sticks out and feels hot and generous. Medium weight, the mid-palate has tar, liquorice, and marmite-y qualities. Tannins are relatively smooth, and the finish is medium to long. Hotter vintage?

  (Tasted Blind) Medium to deep ruby. On the nose, there is a mix of red and black brambly fruits, wood spices, liquorice, and some ferruginous qualities.
  The entry is very oak-dominated, giving it a youthful sheen. Excellent concentration, this full-bodied wine boasts breadth and generosity; the tannins are ripe and firm, with a core of blackberry, black cherry, liquorice, and tapenade inside. Ambitious and powerful, they pull it off, as it seems well-proportioned and balanced, with a fresh acid edge and a long, lingering finish.

  (Tasted Blind) Mid+ crimson red.
  Expressive aromas of black cherry, black plum, and blackberry compote, with notes of orange studded with cloves, Assam tea, iodine, and medicinal qualities. Complex with a crème fraiche note also present.
  There is a ripe, juicy entry with fresh acidity and a core of dark fruit. Sinewy in texture, it has a solid tannic grip, yet the wine retains a sheen that doesn't curtail the finish.

A touch of reduction at first quickly dissipates as a plethora of fruit arrives: soft, ripe berries, red currants, black plum, blackberry, and iodine that moves towards cough syrup. A juicy fruit entry with more strawberry and raspberry; medium weight and appealing, made in a supremely drinkable commercial style. Elegant in a way with bright acidity, soft tannins and a twist of pepper, it lacked a sense of place.

It's sappy with some light spices, lively acidity, and grainy tannins that taper quickly to a short, truncated finish.

  Tasted Blind) Medium+ garnet. The bouquet is a little feral and bretty, but it pushes on with leather polish, hung game, and roasted meat. Medium intensity with some riper red fruit peeking out. A fruitier entry with a robust structure in a muscular style that delivers ripe fruit concentration, velvety texture, and lovely depth.
  There is a sweet raspberry and loganberry compote, thicker tannins and a medium finish. Once the initial feral notes blew off, it grew on me.

  (Tasted Blind) Medium+ bright crimson. Classic Côte-Rotie with floral notes intertwined with black fruit, iodine, medicinal notes, dried herbs, peat and tapenade. The palate is lithe and juicy, with plenty of fruit that, not being too weighted, flows on the palate with a delightful freshness. Some tar and those dried flowers lined the mid-palate, and there is an austere tannin grip, but this is solid, classic and extended with a pepper twist on the close. Still needs time.

  (Tasted Blind) Medium crimson to orange rim. Light-bodied style, Burgundy-like with feral hung game, curry leaves, iron, and blood. A little Brett present. Evolved on the palate with aged qualities, balsamic with sturdy tannins. This is way past its best.
