Introduction

Spent the day in the Napa vicinity on May 16, 2025 enjoying wine tastings with my youngest daughter at Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards, Groth Vineyards, and Miner Family Wines.

Flight 1 - Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyads, St Helena, CA (11 Notes)

First appointment of the day. Todd and Richard did a wonderful job of taking us through their current lineup of white, then red wines in their cave.

  • 2020 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Pale lemon color. Aromatic. Great mix of citrus, stone fruit, herbs, minerals. Acidity provides balance and supports a solid finish.

  • 2020 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Sarah's Cuvee 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Nicely conceived blend of Semillon, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. Not quite as expressive as the Sauvignon Blanc, but very good. Very floral nose, a range of green and white fruits culminating in a medium finish.

  • 2019 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Pale gold color. Wonderful balance, not overly oaked. Citrus, stone and orchard fruits, light vanilla. Sees partial Malo so there’s definitely fresh acidity for balance and finish. Love the approach.

  • 2018 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Right Bank 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Clear, medium ruby color. The leafy aromas from the 56% Cabernet Franc really show through, with the 44% Merlot adding wonderful red juicy fruits. Early development. Structure will support medium to longer term cellaring. Balanced. Long finish.

  • 2018 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Second time with this particular vintage, and it’s great! I consider this to be their “flagship offering” and it never, never disappoints. I’ve had vintages of this offering dating back to the late ‘90’s and I can’t sing praises and acolytes enough for this wine!

  • 2019 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Éloge

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Second time with this offering. Carbon copy to my tasting last December in Austin. An excellent Bordeaux styled blend (Meritage).

  • 2022 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Syrah Sarah's

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Winery tasting. Second time with this offering. Youthful. Definitely very juicy and fruit forward. Given some additional cellaring, I think this will start to come into its own in he next 1-2 years.

  • 2019 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Signature 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. First time with this offering in any vintage. Pours a deep, ruby color, full bodied texture. Very youthful. Shows a plethora of primary black fruits. Rich, deep mouthfeel. Very structured. Very long finish. Requires additional cellaring. I have two bottles of this in my cellar, which I’m unlikely to even open until the 2028-2029 timeframe. Needs decanting and food short and medium term.

  • 2019 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Franc 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. First time with this offering. Highly aromatic. Leafy tobacco, red fruits and notable structure. Early phase of development. Needs food and decanting short term. Finishes strong and long. Very nice.

  • 2018 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Aurum 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Despite a very solid lineup today, this was the “star of the show”. Comprised of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Displays a very deep ruby, bordering on a purple color. Killer nose, all black fruits, very structured. Youthful. Big finish. Like the “Signature Cabernet”, it’s just too early for this. Decant and enjoy with food short and intermediate term. Just outstanding!

  • 2019 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery tasting. Similar to my experience back in December in Austin. You can’t beat the value proposition for this entry level cab. Excellent.

Flight 2 - Groth Vineyards (5 Notes)

Second Stop of the day. Went through a 45 minute tasting experience which focused on the differences between Groth's well known retail flagship offerings and their higher end "estate offerings" which are much more limited in distribution and availability.

  • 2022 Groth Sauvignon Blanc Estate 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. Huge step up over its standard Napa bottling. Similar composition to the regular bottling, except using a combination of oak, stainless, and concrete eggs, which along with “sur lie” add lots of complexity. Very nice.

  • 2022 Groth Chardonnay Estate 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. Using a winemaking approach similar to the Sauvignon Blanc, this also sees “sur lie” and a different regimen of oak aging compared to the standard Napa Chardonnay bottling: 86% neutral oak and 14% new oak. Sees partial Malo. Fresh citrus and orchard fruits without obtrusive oak application make this appealing to those who eschew old style oak bombs.

  • 2020 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Winery Tasting. Similar to by experience last August with additional bottle age. This was not decanted. Excellent with a wonderful mix of black and red fruits; Early stages of development, structure is far from being integrated. Long finish. Drink with decanting and food or hold.

  • 2019 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Winery Tasting. IMHO this is consistently their best and highest quality offering. Youthful and still relatively primary. Black fruits, structure and oak need more time to integrate. Decanting and hearty food required short term. Drink through 2035+.

  • 2020 Groth Oakcross 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Winery Tasting. Groth did not bottle a 2020 version of the Reserve Cabernet because of low yields. Instead the fruit normally used for the reserve went into this which was comprised of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest being Merlot, PV, CF. Very good, but IMHO overpriced at $99 USD.

Flight 3 - Miner Family Winery (8 Notes)

Last stop of the day. This is a somewhat new producer for me, and a winery which I've only become interested in recently. First time visit to this winery on Silverado Trail. I found it very interesting, they have no estate owned vineyards; all their grapes are sourced through long term contract with growers throughout Napa valley. Very impressed by the quality of their product lineup.

  • 2023 Miner Family Viognier Paso Robles 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Winery Tasting. Clear medium lemon color. Pineapple and other tropical fruits. As expected from this varietal the mouthfeel is juicy and full bodied but low in acidity. Weak finish.

  • 2024 Miner Family Sauvignon Blanc 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. Pale lemon color. Very aromatic; the flavor profile reflects gooseberry, mixed citrus, herbal notes, and green apple. Medium acidity provides balance and supports a long satisfying finish.

  • 2022 Miner Family Chardonnay Wild Yeast 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. Sourced from the Hyde Vineyard. Made in a bigger, more demonstrable style with butter, oak, mixed citrus and ripe apple. Sees 100% malo. Solid finish.

  • 2021 Miner Family Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Winery Tasting. This ended up being a bit of a surprise. Displays a clear, pale ruby color; made in a lighter bodied, very Burgundian style. Fresh red fruits: strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry with some background minerality. Structured with light tannin and medium acidity providing balance. Solid finish.

  • 2021 Miner Family Merlot 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. Big, deep, rich and structured. I probably would have guessed Cabernet Sauvignon in a blind tasting. Comprised of 86% Merlot with CS and PV making up the rest. Very youthful, requires both decanting and food at this juncture. Lots of upside with additional cellaring.

  • 2021 Miner Family Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Winery Tasting. As expected, this was excellent. Very aromatic and delicious showing spicy red currant, mixed berries, cherries, etc. Still primary. Structured. Needs tine. Give it a few years and this should be outstanding.

  • 2021 Miner Family Cabernet Sauvignon Volker Eisele Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Chiles Valley

Winery Tasting. Hmmm…Youthful and closed currently; needs time, oxygen and food. Hold through 2026+. Given the vineyard source, this should be excellent in a few years.

  • 2018 Miner Family The Oracle 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Winery Tasting. This is the winery’s top end, flagship wine, made in a Bordeaux styled blend (Meritage). I have a couple bottles of this sitting in my home cellar, so this is an early look. The 2016 vintage that I enjoyed recently was outstanding. This did not disappoint. Still youth and primary but should be ready in another 18-24 months.
