Introduction

Impromptu tasting.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2023 Château Lafleur Les Champs Libres 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux

At PnP, ripping acidity that mellowed out with air. Turned into a beauty over time with citrus and lemon notes. Huge QPR points for this wine. SB lovers should be buying this. Not the prototypical French SB from Sancerre. In fact, it appears from my research that this is made from clonal material from Sancerre.

  • 2023 Miani Sauvignon 97 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

I loved this wine from the start. I now know why this producer is highly sought after and respected, especially for its SB blend. For me, the WOTN. This was New Zealand meets France. It has the complexity and seriousness of a French SB but the freshness and tropical essence of New Zealand. This was bright, good acid, good finish. Lots of lilikoi (passionfruit) on the nose. Must try and must buy!

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2013 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

As much as I love drinking wine young, this might have been one of those times where bottle age would have been better. This started off decent, but was quite tannic and for me, showed little fruit. It did get better for a short period of time but after 3-4 hours, started to drop off and almost shut down, showing a bit of graphite, lead pencil and a bit of steel-y notes. I have a 2019 in the cellar and will be ignoring these bottles for a good 15+ years before I consider opening one.

  • 2012 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    HUGE LETDOWN....

Right from PnP, the wine felt off. Possibly flawed, but since I do not have a reference point, it was hard to determine if this was flawed or if this is just a style of wine I do not like. This wine reminded me of when my grandpa would visit from Hawaii for a week and everytime I would go into his room he was staying in, it would have a sort of spice note in the air. Well, this wine had that exact note (Old Spice?). Very little fruit for me. This wine did not develop in any way over the 4 hour period of drinking the wine. I initially double decanted it, then decanted it again and nothing helped. I have one more bottle that will also see darkness for a while and I cross my fingers that this shows differently than what this bottle was. Sad...
