Introduction

Frank came over with a vertical of the Vietti Perbacco and I pulled all of Vietti I have out of the cellar to have a look at them all. Have at it!

Flight 1 - Vietti Perbacco (6 Notes)

Lovely to look at a vertical of these...lots to like

  • 2016 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. A little red cherry, warm earth, slight leather, lifted, dried flowers, with time a litlte blood note joins the cherry and earth notes. Medium plus intensity acidity is fresh, savoury cherry fruit is beautifully integrated with the talc textured super persistent tannins. Long. Lovely.

  • 2017 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Riper red cherry strays towards the jammy, a little spice note and a touch of baked earth, pot pourri and metallic elements. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, super persistent, silky, tongue sucking tannins, cherry fruit isn't so ripe here, travels long assisted by alcohol warmth. Okay to nice.

  • 2018 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Pretty initially, floral with red cherry compote, then a more savoury, meaty underpin and a little fruit tea and fresh herbs, a little tar. Medium plus intensity acidity is slightly sharp, oddly feels a little lean but with some alcohol warmth, tannins are savoury, drying, slightly grainy, not integrated though. Bah after the nose but time?

  • 2019 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of blood, meaty underpin, fruit in the background; touches of cherry lozenge grow with time but all very savoury. Medium plus intensity acidity , plentiful chewy tannins are in charge on the palate, a little alcoholically warm with sour cherry fruit in support. <shrugs>

  • 2020 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. A touch closed but showing pretty red cherry and berry fruit, a little dusty spice, slight alcohol prickle, gets more bloody and savoury with time. Juicy acidity, chewy tannins, fruit initially explodes in the mouth, filling the palate but drops a little quickly, slightly bitter on the finish.

  • 2021 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

From Coravin. Bright cherry fruit, touch of pot pourri, a little citrus peel, fruit tea, earthy and chalky underpin with time. In the mouth the immediacy and balance of the fruit, tannins and acid is exceedingly pleasing, a little lactic creaminess joins on the finish, quite simple but also quite nice.

Flight 2 - Vietti Castiglione (4 Notes)

It was fun to try these after the Perbaccos to see that comparison

  • 2015 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Savoury, earthy, cherry, touch of yeast extract, pot pourri, dried flowers, chalky minerality and dried citrus peel with an almost wetly dilute quality. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, fruit tea, pot pourri, super persistent silky tannins have a slightly menthol quality. Dilute here as well but, despite this, rather nice; that dilute quality seems, in combination with the acidity, to lend a pleasing freshness. All travels long. Nice.

  • 2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Slight yeast extract, a little red cherry, savoury spice, the cherry note grows with time but without becoming fruit sweet, touch of leather. Medium plus intensity acidity and medium plus intensity tannins, savoury fruit, all travel long but are not integrated yet. Powerful but not resolved. Time. Promise.

  • 2018 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Quite a reticent nose shows cherry fruit, very slightly lifted note, herbal and slightly meaty underpin. This grows with time and starts to show some dried flowers and with a little more ripeness to the cherry and a little red berry fruit. The flavours, tannins and acid are fully integrated; still quite simple but 'complete'. The fruit is slightly sour but not off-puttingly so, slightly bitter on the finish. Okay.

  • 2019 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Meaty and savoury over pot pourri, cherry fruit, a little yeast extract, perfumed top notes. Juicy, fresh, fleshy, savoury cherry fruit, plentiful chewy though silky textured tannins, flavours just about persist long, finishes savoury, kind of yum.

Flight 3 - Random Vietti 2012 (2 Notes)

Just the two here. That Masseria needs to be tidied up...

  • 2012 Vietti Barbaresco Masseria

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Slight oxidised note show some honey (?), a little bruised apple, lifted almost volatile notes, slightly porty alcohol levels, a little dusty baking spice. High acid is offset by drying, savoury, coarse flour textured tannins, there is an almost maderised quality to the fruit, even a touch of rancio, meaty and savoury, very long, compelling but drink up soon for me.

  • 2012 Vietti Barolo Brunate

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Dense smelling, savoury fruits show a little dark plum and cherry, sweet spice, caramel oak, citrus peel. On the palate the acid, tannins and flavours are integrated, all travel long. Not primary but still feels oddly young, powerful but still fresh. A bit clever.

Flight 4 - Vietti Lazzarito (2 Notes)

Wow. Lovely. Really lovely.

  • 2011 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Earthy, leathery, a little plummy, savoury spice, a sense of concentration; touches of beef extract. And that concentration is on the palate as well. Medium plus intensity acidity and tannins; the latter drying, grippy, grainy, plummy fruit, leather, slight mushroom umami notes, dried citrus peel, ridiculously long. Woof.

  • 2016 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. A little chalky minerality, fresh herbs, meaty and savoury underpin, dark hued-fruits; plums and almost brambles, touch of fruit tea, like the 2011 a sense of concentration but with power here. Already integrated on the palate, juicy acidity, fleshy tannins, fruit super persistent, alcohol lends a little peppery note on the finish, everything travels long, not as shouty as I expected it to be, straying to the profound, very good indeed.

Closing

Wow, what a lovely opportunity to look at an excellent selection of these wines. Really good across the board for me with only a couple of the Perbacco not performing as well as I would have hoped.
