Friend organised a Barthod dinner, with me contributing a horizontal of '12s and another friend contributing four older bottles. The best bottles showed dark, but crystalline and pure dark red fruit that was unmistakably Chambolle despite lacking the sweet, floral, and approachable character of other makers. My personal favourites were the '01 and '04 Fuees, and the '12 Cras. First two were mostly unanimous, some preferred the ‘12 village as the third. Lastly, was interesting that the warmest cintages ‘99 and ‘03 were the poorest bottles of the night.
2009 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 94 Points
France, Champagne
Similar to previous impressions - ripe but delicate citrus fruit that was well-managed in a warm vintage. Classic and refined.

NV Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine 93 Points
France, Champagne
Base '12, disgorged April '14. Quite developed with honeyed, sweet notes that were warring with the acidity. Pleasurable but would have liked more freshness.

2014 Antoine Bouvet Champagne Millésime Extra Brut 91 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum. 50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot. Zero dosage, disgorged Nov '23. Approachable and easy-going citrus fruit without anything outstanding. Still youthful.

2001 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
On fire tonight. Some mocha notes on the nose which was floral and sensual, palate was all about silky, cool dark red fruit. Both the '01 and '04 were for acid lovers like me. Very complete.

2004 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Distracting greenness on the fresh pour with the '04 acidity on the palate, but put on more weight to be more serious with air. Surprisingly more structure than the '01 but another wine for acid lovers - a quintessential aged Burgundy. Needs time in the glass for the greenness (that I am not tolerant of) to disappear before becoming an excellent wine.

1999 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
I thought this was flawed because of the brittle cork but seems consistent with previous notes. Quite plummy and resolved with rich dark fruit whereas better '99s would still be youthful. Also had a distracting VA and lactic note.

2003 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Similar to the '99 wth rich, pruney fruit, but had even less acidity. Some brett and liquorice on the nose. The cooler vintage flight was much better which reinforced my view that acidity is a necessary condition to age.

2012 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Punched well above its weight, showed as well as the 1ers in the line-up. Deeper, darker and more youthful fruit than the older wines but shared the same crystalline, precise fruit of the '01 and '04. More tannic and structured than the Chatelots alongside.

2012 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
First time trying this plot. Rather austere and light compared the village alongside, even though this had greater depth. Definitely needs more time.

2012 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Most elegant and lifted of the wines tonight, tannins were present but supple. A step up from the village and Chatelots that came before.

Dark fruit with some unresolved tannins but clearly the most complex of the '12s in the line-up. Needs more time to reach the heights of the '01 and '04 Fuées as the fruit didn't quite fully unfurl, but this was impeccably balanced with mineral and precise finish.
