Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2016 Chappellet Chenin Blanc 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

The nose is citrus-driven with tones of papaya, pears, red apples, white peaches, some oily notes, yellow flowers, and some saline notes. There is an upfront quality that is fragrant, though it does lack some depth. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and forward with integrated, medium acidity. This is enjoyable and forward, but it doesn't bring too much complexity or intrigue.

  • 2015 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

The nose is well balanced and poised with tones of red apples, pears, warm oils, peaches, vanilla beans, some white fruits, cinnamon spices, and a touch of nutmeg. This is well put together as it shows off some excellent spice notes to compliment the stone fruits. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and textured with crisp, medium+ acidity that shows off lovely persistence. The acidity does show some pointed edges though and could well use a few years to fully balance out. This is yet another Chard that makes me enjoy Liquid Farm so much. It has a lovely rounded quality while still having some verve.

  • 2001 Ramey Diamond Mountain 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

The nose is in full harmony and balance but with flowing, warm fruited tones of black cherries, raspberries, cassis, sweet tobacco, currants, licorice, spice notes, and violets. There is a polished quality to the nose that is showing off the maturity while the tones are rounded. The Full bodied feel is plush and balanced with medium acidity and fine-grained, medium+ tannins that are more there as a framework than dominating. This is in a great groove right now and is showing beautifully. There will always be a richer side to the fruit, and it feels like the structure has resolved as much as it will.

  • 2012 Sherwin Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Spring Mountain District 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

The nose shows off the lovely Sprin Mountain fruit that this has an ample amount of with flowing tones of dark red cherries, cranberries, dark raspberries, vanilla bean, licorice, red and black currants, spearmint leaves, and a touch of roses. There is excellent depth and roundness to the nose that is a bit intoxicating. The Full bodied feel is robust, yet plush and balanced with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The tannins have a bit of sneakiness to them as they catch up with you on the back end. This is really gorgeous even at this young stage, but it feels like it has another gear it can kick on with some more age.

  • 2005 Ovid Red Wine 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

The nose is deep, heady, and pure with lovely and flowing tones of red cherries, cranberries, raspberries, some ashy notes, crushed rocks, roses, potpourri, and some currants. There is excellent layering to the nose as it has really rounded into form. The Full bodied feel is plush and balanced with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure has effectively resolved, though there is a slight bit of tannic grip that lets you know this still has some bite.

  • 2013 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

The nose is rich and robust, but with a lovely purity to the tones of raspberries, black cherries, black currants, cranberries, sweet tobacco, licorice, roses, and some fresh herbs. The is excellent depth and panache to the nose that is a lot of fun to smell. The Full bodied feel is robust and balanced with medium acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. The structure has some clear youth as it does dominate a bit on the palate. I can see this really blossoming with another 4+ years of aging as its right on that cusp of kicking on.

  • 2014 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

The nose shows off a darker take compared to the 13 as it leans more into the chocolatey side of things with black cherries, licorice, black raspberries, some toasty oak, blackberries, currants, vanilla beans, and a touch of violets. There is good depth, but this doesn't show itself as expressive as the other Mountain Cabs that are open. The Full bodied feel is robust and brawny with medium acidity and chewy, high tannins. The structure is quite youthful and strong. This could really use the better part of 5+ years before it fully shows itself.
