Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2017 Pierre Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Rich and textural but well-balanced with good acidity, guessed '17 Chassagne because of the classicism without overtly showing Puligny or Meursault characteristics. My style of white Burgundy (i.e., opulent without being over the top) even though the PVG signature wasn't as strong as more recent vintages.

  • 2022 Nicolas et Dominique Barbou L'Effrontée 93 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Touraine-Oisly

Was excited to try this bottle, apparently it was made by Dominique (the father of Nicolas). A very well-balanced SB with precise green apple and melon fruit, liked the searing acidity on this. An understated but refined wine; very different in style from Cotat for example with less richness and body.

  • 2010 Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Pierreclos

Clearly older than the PVG before but still quite youthful, guessed a warm vintage Meursault from '09 or '12. Rich texture with some nutty notes; fruit was mostly citrus but bordering on tropical. A very gourmand wine.

  • 2021 Azienda Agricola Sciara Terre Siciliane 1200 Contrada Nave 92 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

263/1390 bottles produced, 100% Grenache. Cooler fruit and higher acidity compared to the '22 Nerello, I guessed the pair as CdPs as they both had the liquorice note that I got from the CdPs the previous night. Preferred this for its restraint.

  • 2022 Azienda Agricola Sciara Terre Siciliane 980 90 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

1459/4118 bottles produced, 100% Nerello Mascalese. Warmer fruit with more overt sweetness and liquorice notes so thought this was a CdP, but some ashiness did emerge with air. Alcohol was a little prominent here.

  • 2019 Catherine et Claude Maréchal Pommard La Chanière 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

My contribution. Consistent with what I tasted at the winery - delicate, pretty red fruit that had the rustic edge of CdB. Some warmth from the vintage but no excessive alcohol or heat. Superb value.

  • 2023 Messager Germain Fixin Côté Cour 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin

My contribution. Quite dark-fruited with good structure, some candied notes to begin with but became more savoury with air. Not the most cohesive now but underlying material has potential.

  • 2023 Domaine Rousset Saint-Joseph 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

My contribution. More brooding than my impression from the domaine tasting, also had more obvious VA and heat. Did become more elegant with air so probably this just needs more time as well.
