Introduction
Dibbs generously opened an outstanding line-up of his favourite producers for his birthday dinner. Tough to pick the winners but my top 3 in order of preference were the '83 Margaux, '66 Unico and '90 Margaux. The '83 Margaux was one of my bucket list wines and it lived up to expectations. Truly thankful for his generosity, probably the best line-up of my life. Looking forward to part two in a few weeks where we will repay the favour!
NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé 96 Points
France, Champagne
Disgorged 5 Aug 2019, 2012 base. Initially preferred the lieu-dit alongside as this took time to get going, but this unfurled beautifully. Crisp red fruit with an unrivalled intensity, so linear and precise. Not as showy as the last bottle but still outstanding.

NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles 95 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Disgorged 24 Feb 2014, so 2007 base. Golden in colour with some sweetness and oxidative notes so I thought this was a '96 Krug. So expressive and energetic despite the rounder nature, Selosse wines really have a unique intensity.

1966 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 96 Points

Incredibly youthful for its age, the nose was so incredibly perfumed and floral with some traces of VA that it reminded me of the Roumier BM that I had the previous day so I went for that! Others went for Bordeaux but I didn't get any greenness or pencil shavings. Usually I am not a fan of Unicos as they can be black-fruited, tannic and never ready but this was at its absolute peak. Very pretty and velvety red fruit, a beautifully proportioned wine. Developed some soy notes with air so best not to leave it in the glass for too long.

1962 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Flawed

Some debate on whether this was corked; was quite mild to me and didn't get worse with air. In fact, the fruit on this was even more vibrant and youthful than the '66, albeit less expressive due to the mild taint. Would love to try a clean bottle of this.

2001 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 93 Points

Colour showed more signs of age compared to the '02, palate showed a classic cool vintage character with restrained dark red fruit and some sous bois. I didn't think Mortet because it lacked the magic of the other Mortets that I've had before, but it's a good line-up when old Mortets turn out to be the weakest wines!

2002 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 93 Points

Similar to previous impressions. A brilliant ruby colour in appearance, palate had ripe cherry liquor but this was more tannic and reserved compared to previous bottles. Became more expressive with air, as the rich, decadent fruit became more cohesive. Quite a contrast to the '01 such that I didn't think that they were the same producer, this was much more masculine compared to the feminine '01.

1999 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
So quintessential Chambolle that everyone managed to guess this right. Gorgeous floral nose that was on the deeper end of the register as usual with Roumiers; palate had rich, sensual dark cherry fruit that was pure silk. Sensational showing from both Roumiers tonight, our lucky day to have both that were so open-knit. A powerhouse of a wine that is still very youthful with a long way to go.

2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 95 Points

Very similar to the '99 but less immediately seductive as it took time to open up. I ended up marginally preferring this for its more slender frame and higher acidity, but a sensational showing from both Roumiers tonight - our lucky day to have both that were so open-knit.

1983 Château Margaux 97 Points

My bucket list wine and it didn't disappoint. So opulent and seductive with velvety tannins, texture was so elegant and refined for a Bordeaux. Thought the producer was obvious which made the vintage guess much easier. So regal and complex with layers of dark red fruit gave way to a generous, mouth-coating finish. My WOTN among very tough competition.

1990 Château Margaux 96 Points

Similar to previous impressions, a very complete and harmonious wine with gorgeous aromatics and palate. Others liked this more but I preferred the '83 as it was more seductive and elegant, whereas this had power and structure. The best pair of the night for me.
