Birthday Dinner 2025 pt 1

Introduction

Like last year, I decided to share all the bottles on my birthday. This time around, the theme was Vintage Variations: the same producer, the same plot, different vintages. All of the wines showed extremely well, except 1962 Unico, which, albeit flawed, was still good.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Same bottle as Melvin. Selosse rose needs a lot of time to blossom in my experience. This took about 2 hours in the bottle. This was no different, a contrast to the Les Carelles which was ready from the get-go. For me a more intellectual wine compared to the Les Carelles. On the night I preffered the Carelles.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles 96 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Same bottle as Melvin. This was so showy and sexy wine. It stole the show from the get go. I didn’t check back later in the evening.

  • 1966 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 98 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Same bottle as PClin and Melvin. Thankfully, I managed to source a super high-fill bottle of this from auction a while back. The cork was solid and came out fully with the Durand. These Unicos have this ability to gain such purity and elegance with age.

Spectacular showing from this wine. The perfume from this was mindblowing and a super sexy and sleek palate. You couldn't feel the age of the wine or the weight of Tempranillo or Cab. Age has melded them into a package unfamiliar to most. This was flat out gorgeous. Stop you at your track, kind of wine! WOTN and year! Need to seek out more '60s and '70s Unicos.

  • 1962 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Flawed

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

I didn’t get cork taint as I am less sensitive to it than others. But the fruit wasn’t as vibrant as the 66. Although gained a lot with air, it was still not showing its very best.

  • 2001 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Same bottle as Melvin. Weakest wine of the night receives a 93 score shows the quality at the table.

  • 2002 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Same bottle as Melvin. Still a long way to go I think for 02 Mortets. Needs another 5 years atleast. But it has definitely improved in the last 3 years since my last bottles.

  • 1999 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Same bottle as Melvin. For me the intellectual wine of the night. Everyone immediately said Chambolle for this. Roumier has this amazing gift to translate terroir into the bottle. He is one of the few winemakers that can consistently do so. This still has a lot to go in terms of sheer stuffing. I daresay that it is probably 10 years away from its real peak. For me, drinking much better than many of the Roumier Bonnes Mares currently.

  • 2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Same bottle as Melvin. I clearly had a preference for 99 than the 01. That being said I would say the 01 is closer to peak than 99.

  • 1983 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Same bottle as Melvin & PCLin. I was pretty gone by the time I tasted this. I couldn’t really tell the 83 and 90 apart much. Both were staggeringly good. But I think on the day, my heart belonged to the 66 Unico and 99 Roumier

  • 1990 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Same bottle as Melvin & PClin. Similar impressions to the 1983. Both were staggeringly good!
