    Great producers have it all with consistent and super showing at every level. This had some stemmy goodness with juicy and silky fruit amidst a backdrop of vosne spice and oak. Nicely balance here, and perhaps the 18s are finally coming around nicely.

  • 2009 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 90 Points

    Initial fears that this would be too coiled up turned true. Dark, broody and unyielding, this was stiff as nails with a bouquet showing off dark plums, chocolate, oolong tea and licorice. Palate showing signs of a sleeping beast and never really got going. Either decant for 2-3 hours or slow-ox for 8 hours, unfortunately we did not get to revisit this.

  • 2019 Gérard Mugneret Vosne-Romanée Cuvée Précolombière 92 Points

    Kicking off the evening, only my second time trying this producer and equally impressed. Juicy dark fruit dominates the bouquet with dark cherries, sandalwood, stems, lavender and violets. Palate has a viscous mid-palate, presenting itself as a muscular bodybuilder with gentle giant vibes, never threatening to overpower while showing off a good demeanor.

  • 2020 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Procès 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Popped and left in bottle to slow ox for 4 hours. At the first pour, macerated cherries, sweet plums, rosewater, sandalwood and sage fills the bouquet, however a little too coiled. Palate similar to the bouquet that it was slightly too coiled. However, with the kind of density and concentration, that brought along the promise of better things to come with more air-time. Putting this aside for more time to open up, this got way better towards the end of the evening, with a convergence towards a more integrated mouthfeel (texture wise) and balance between silky fruit and earthy minerality.

  • 2015 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée La Colombière 95 Points

    The running joke was that if we were having a George Mugneret Vosne Precolombiere earlier and the progression should be to a Colombiere... and the very generous host obliged us 😍 Intoxicating bouquet of cranberries, pomegranate, aniseed, cardamon, violets, incense smoke and plum compote had us enamoured. Palate is so effortless and transparent while being so sensual and silky. Excellent wine today, and would love to see how this ages.

    Coming earlier on, this was ready and firing, as with most of the 07s these days. Reductive bouquet with some flint, starfruit, nectarines, sudachi zest, creamy mousse, chalk and honey. There is focus and persistence in spades along with a lovely core of mid-palate density and minerality. With more time in glass, more minerality emerges with more integration, towards the end of the evening, lemon curd, hibiscus and lavender come into play with subtle nuances between florals and fruit.

  • 1996 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bonnes Mares 98 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    Hushes spread around the table when this was revealed. Intoxicating and aromatic bouquet showing crushed strawberries and mulberries alongside savoury meat spices, roses, hibiscus, oregano spices and oolong tea. As this opened up, eucalyptus and menthol emerges with time (funny fact, I was starting to get a bit of a blocked nose halfway through but I nosed this and my nose cleared), Palate initially a bit more backward, showing more rusticity than sensuality but that changed with time, becoming more silky and attractive, with glimpses of wild strawberries, figs and fresh green plums across a backdrop of wet leaves and sadle. Immense clarity, concentration and focus here with needle-point winemaking precision, what a treat this was!

  • 1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 97 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    First ever DRC Montrachet and this is a clear example of old school winemaking that really needs time to unfold, any fears on whether this was still drinkable was quashed on the first nose of the wine. Bouquet had aged as one expects, along with charred/grilled pineapples, yellow peaches, hazelnuts, blue cheese, white truffles and chrysanthemum flowers with that tell tale hint of oxidating through age. Despite all that age, palate was soul-meltingly gorgeous - intensity, concentration and finesse in spades, with superb length and power. Until the last drop, this held in place firmly, never declining but some slight evolution and more creamy mousse and yellow fruits (starfruits, lychee) emerge. Truly blessed to try this today.

  • 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    This marks the oldest DRC I've had. Aromatic but slightly cloudy bouquet showing prunes, dried cherries, roses, white mushrooms, aniseed and sadle. While the slight tired bouquet had set us up for a similar experience on the palate, I was taken aback at the level of freshness and concentration. While the fruit is slightly drying out a little at this stage, there is a ton of fruit intact with prunes, plums and baked apples rising to the fore amidst a backdrop of a sturdy and lively core. This never really declined through the night and held consistently. Finish was always silky with fine tannins, though seemingly reminding you they exist at the back of the palate. Showing really well in my opinion and probably no further upside at this stage.

  • 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 97 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Privileged to try this alongside the 1972, thanks again to the super generous host! From the first pour, the absolutely bombing and fire-cracking bouquet signature of DRC enthralled the group almost immediately. Soaring aromatics on display here with sarsaperilla, cranberries, macerated bayberries, nutmeg, sage, sandalwood, violets and eucalyptus. Palate starts off tight, as with the vintage typicity, but with time opens up and delivers an outstanding experience. Great concentration and finesse here in spades, with sensuality and power in pitch perfect balance - still incredibly fresh and will definitely go the distance but already so gorgeous today (with time permit for this to open up).

    Decanted for 4 hours at this stage and we were having this blind. A gauntlet was thrown to TBG, guess this correctly and you can open any bottle you want in the cellar. The noise quietened and the stage was set.. Between the ongoing competition and my own lacklustre guessing skills, I thought this was showing really well. Hints of a ripe vintage pointed me towards 2018 but alas, it was the 2022.

    Striking and exuberant bouquet here showing plenty of vosne spices, plums, apricots cherries with plenty of promise. Palate shows off great intensity, along with drive and verve. Needs time to get going and this is one for the cellars but what a firecracker this would be

  • 1989 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 94 Points

    Closing the night with this was the perfect ending. Provenance I say is king here really with this showing incredibly fresh and youthful. Lovely nuanced bouquet showing blood oranges, cherries, black mulberries, sandalwood and sadle. Palate is wonderfully nuanced with good depth and concentration, this is at a great spot today for sure
