  • 2012 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    Coppery orange, medium intensity of color. Not highly aromatic: light fruit, menthol, sherried fruits. More concentrated and pleasurable than the '11 I had tried previously.

  • 2015 Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Straw yellow with green flecks (or was it just the fluorescent lighting?). On the nose, initially dominated by honey and yellow flowers, bruised apples, lemon curd, pineapple. With time, toast and popcorn kernel took over. Lovely freshness on the palate, but too much oak influence for my taste. Would have been great with a rich poultry dish.

  • 2010 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Charmes-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Dulled ruby, opaque with some translucency towards the rim. Prominent candied raspberries on the nose, backed by sous bois, bark, and the slightest barnyard whiff. Palate was very soft, with good concentration of red fruit framed by stemmy tannins.

  • 2021 Weingut Lehnert-Veit Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Spätburgunder trocken GG

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Pale ruby. Nose was dominated by barnyard wild funk, not to my liking. Backed with strawberries. Very light and spritzy wine, flavors and acidity on the palate were lovely but lacking concentration.

  • 2012 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Bosconia

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    Deep ruby with slight rim variation. Nose was quiet and tight initially, with cranberries and strawberries. Improved tremendously after a couple of hours open, bringing out the oxidative fruit qualities. Kept coming back to this one.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Not showing its age at all. Very deep and dark, ruby leaning purple, completely opaque with almost no variation at the rim. Classic BDX nose: dirt, dust, cassis, in that order. Similar on the palate, earth-driven but backed by blackberries.

  • 2019 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese feinherb "Onkel Peter" #4

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    HF is always a winner. Super pale, straw, completely unsaturated color. Perfectly ripe tropical fruits on the nose, with this chalky pineapple sensation that I adore. Incredibly pure fruit expression on the palate, off-dry, plenty of acid. Massive pleasure from this bottle, I could drink this endlessly.

  • 2019 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Pale straw-yellow with green accents. Ripe pineapple and papaya on the nose, leaning overripe. Palate is thin and tart, just a touch of RS. Would be good with food but my least favorite of the night's rieslings.

  • 2020 Julian Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett

    Similar impression to the last bottle, although I appreciated this more on the day. Super pale straw yellow. Quiet nose, a bit of sulfur, lemon, tropical fruit. Off-dry, but tons of acid that keeps the sweetness in check. More mango/papaya than pineapple, more lemon than lime. Lip-smacking, cheek-sucking acidity.

  • 2021 Kilburg Goldtröpfchen Riesling trocken

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Pale straw yellow. High intensity on the nose led by confectionary tropical fruits: candied pineapple, syrupy fruit cup. Some purple florals as well, lavender and some soapy notes. Dry, much drier than the nose would lead you to expect, and a light touch on the palate. Finishes on the florals, very perfumey aftertaste like a Mrs. Meyers lavender candle.
