Cahors tasting

Introduction

Cahors wines are dark, and the malbec gives sturdy wines with lots of cherry and cassis. Oak is in my view a big plus for these wines. They gain in complexity and in weight and the tannins are better integrated. The best ones are very good but not exceptional. Buy some, but not too many to go with regional dishes.

  • 2004 Château du Cèdre Cahors GC 91 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    A step up from the normal bottling, but at more than 2 times the price... The colour is dark, pitch black and unevolved; The nose shows very concentrated cherry fruit and wood, tobacco, eucalyptus; roasted and meaty smells. Certainly complex. The taste is pure and concentrated, and in line with the smells. The juicy Cèdre style is maintained but everything is more concentrated. This is too young really. Long aftertaste. 91-92 pts

  • 2000 Château du Cèdre Cahors Le Cèdre 90 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    Colour: very dark, unpenetrable Fine cherry and dark plum nose but also tertiary aroma's again typical mint/eucalyptus notes. Burnt aroma's, sous-bois, cedar. Taste is quite milde for a Cahors, with juicy cassis and cherry fruit and with good stuffing and freshness. Great tannic structure and good acidity. This is perfect now but can surely age 5 more years. My personal favourite of the evening. 90-91 pts.

  • 2000 Domaine Cosse Maisonneuve Cahors Les Laquets 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    Dark colour (as most cahors). Tertiary aroma's, mushroom, barnyard, burned and smokey notes;cedar and tobacco leaves; leather, ; eucalyptus; taste is complex and fully mature. This wine will not benefit from further ageing and is perfect right now (Le Cèdre 2000 has more energy and fruit left). Long complex finish.

  • 2004 Château la Caminade Cahors Esprit 89 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    Dark colour. Toasted oak, tobacco leaves, cinnamon, eucalyptus; laurel leaves. Quite complex and tight. Kirsch smoke and a pleasing bitterness. long aftertaste Needs 3 or 4 years of cellaring, but is already enjoyable. 89 pts

  • 2004 Château du Cèdre Cahors Le Prestige 87 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    Dark colour; nose of monchérie and oak in a supporting role; alcoholic; Ripe, but too much alcohol; typical for le Cèdre. Good in its price range, needs two more years.

    Dark, but with a lighter rim; Dark cherry fruit on the nose but also leather, violette; cassis, and eucalyptus, later on milk chocolate and and monchérie . Classy vinification, good backbone, clear; Too much acidity to my taste. Very good indeed. A more elegant style of Cahors. Biodynamic
