Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1980 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Magnum. Wonderfully fresh with plenty of apple, supported with lemongrass, ginger and floral hints. Still nicely textured with good+ length.

    France, Champagne

Magnum. Nothing interesting left here. Scary color.

  • 1980 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenothèque 93 Points

    France, Champagne

From the first (better) bottle with a black label. Rich apple and baked apple with very good depth and length. Impressive balance and textural charm, too.

  • 1980 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenothèque 90 Points

    France, Champagne

From the 2nd (less exciting) bottle with a the green-ish label. Less fresh, less intense orchard fruit but still well balanced and very enjoyable.

  • 2007 Ramey Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Magnum. Still nicely fresh with fleshy stone fruit showing very good intensity. A hint of new oak still seems pronounced, but seems to have also brought lots of good spice notes throughout. Very good now.

  • 1980 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Magnum. Fully mature with slightly more earth and leather notes than black fruits, but plenty here with good complexity. Slightly structured and awkward on finish, where is also started showing some oxidative hints. But overall still both very interesting and enjoyable.

  • 1955 Château Canon 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Magnum. Black plum and leather in very charming combination with both sweet and savory spices. Still certainly fresh enough, with very good balance and good depth. Only bad thing I can say is this wasn't as great as when tasting a decade ago, which was also courtesy of the same generous hosts!

  • 1955 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 91 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Fully mature black fruits with earthy aromas and brighter flavors that highlighted both black and red fruits, ending with a slightly tart finish. Good density. I was told the 2nd bottle was more composed and even more exciting.

  • 1980 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 94 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Magnum. More red than black fruits, but just so much going on and unfolding. Very complex with great textural elegance, more so than typical for Único. Not the most powerful vintage of this wine, but still so classic and wonderfully layered. Very good now.

  • 1980 Château d'Yquem

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

So much here, but I think there was a very slight corky note in the deep background.

  • 1955 Château d'Yquem 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Dark color. Caramel apple and apple pie notes throughout with so much spice, all bright enough, showing layers of flavors and great depth. My WOTN, not everybody agreed.
