Flight 1 - Before Friday Dinner (5 Notes)

Flight 2 - Friday's Main Event (4 Notes)

  • 1993 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (8/1/2025)

In vertical, overall slightly disappointing. Mature red fruits with plenty of woodsy spice, on the larger side in the vertical. Powerful, this unfolded begrudgingly over 24 hours. My fav of the vertical.

  • 2001 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (8/1/2025)

In vertical, overall slightly disappointing. Lots here but this never came across with the pristine or perfumed fruit I expect from Leroy, even slightly dirty. Very good concentration.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (8/1/2025)

In vertical, overall slightly disappointing. Ripe and well spiced on Day One but not the most complex vintage for this wine. Opened up more for Day Two, with an intriguing mint note emerging, and I forget if Asian Spice thought it more spearmint or wintergreen.

  • 2011 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (8/1/2025)

Enjoyable enough, but clearly the laggard of the vertical. Slightly stripped or suffering the Same lean and bitter character too common in the vintage. Asian Spice says previous bottles were much better.

Flight 3 - Saturday (10 Notes)

  • 2013 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    (8/2/2025)

Pinot-driven Champagne in its early stages of drinking well. So much berry with enchanting spice notes throughout, this kept opening up in new ways each time tasted and re tasted. Generous dosage goes a long way.

  • 2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    (8/2/2025)

Popped-and-poured as a replacement for an under performer. Slow out of the gate, this started as ripe and well spiced, and then more and more and even more emerged and unfolded, at least as much texturally as with its aromas and flavors. Still young and improving.

  • 1982 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (8/2/2025)

Awkward, volatile, and dirty when popped-and-poured, then much more awkward, volatile, and dirty when retasted the next day. While I’ve tasted a few very good bottles of this wine, it has never lived up to its accolades for me.

  • 2017 Roagna Barbaresco Vecchie Viti Pajè 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (8/2/2025)

Pale red color implies this will be a lighter styled wine, but there is real intensity of red fruits with charming spice and sensational balance. So well crafted, seeming like an ideal representation of the 2017 vintage. Great young. but I was then very disappointed by the Barolo.

  • 2017 Roagna Barolo Vecchie Viti Pira 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (8/1/2025)

Certainly a nice wine, this was larger than the Barbaresco 2017 VV but less cohesive and less pristine. Others enjoyed this more.

  • 1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (8/1/2025)

Alongside Barbaresco Asili 1997, this was bigger with both red and some black cherry, both very well balanced, this Barolo just bigger and more voluminous, if slightly less texturally elegant.

  • 1997 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (8/1/2025)

Alongside Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto 1997, this wasn't quite as big with bright red cherry throughout, both very well balanced, this Barbaresco more texturally elegant if showing slightly less volume.

  • 2017 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (8/3/2025)

Another very good expression of the vintage with bright red cherry and berry, well spiced, very elegant with good enough power. Good now but clearly even more waiting to emerge.

  • 2004 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (8/2/2025)

Powerful array of bright red fruits with great concentration and good balance, even with a clearly firm finish. Getting its groove. This is really coming into its own, vs five years ago when it was just teasing us.
