Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Haut-Brion Blanc 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Wow so concentrated and composed with great pure fruit that is just modestly waxy and supported with bright acidity. Gains depth and brilliance with air, and ultimately drinks like a mature Batard-Montrachet.

  • 2013 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Yikes, this screams of Sauv Blanc with intense grassy, cat pee and citrus notes. The palate follows suit with overtly zingy acidity and Sauv Blanc fruit. I was expecting more and a lot less SB. Maybe just far too early?

  • 1959 Château Cheval Blanc 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Holy hell what an enchanting, enticing nose with layers of mature plum fruit, spice, sweet tobacco leaf and violets. The palate is beautifully round and smooth with so much complexity. Silky and long. Outstanding but a notch below an even better bottle last year.

  • 1961 Château Cheval Blanc 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Oh wow intense and still youthful fruit aromas made complex with spice, sweet tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. Palate has plenty of oomph and gorgeous textures. Powerful, yet elegant finish, Even better with three hours or air where more fruit plushness and intensity emerges. Like last year, I preferred the 61 next to a 59 side-by-side.

  • 1964 Château Cheval Blanc

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

An odd and even unpleasant bottle relative to the 59 and 61. Bandaid comes in and out, and not much else. Odd metallic note on the palate.

  • 1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Bottle variation sucks. Dull nose that isn’t what it could or should be. There's plenty of still-ripe and plush fruit though not delineated and rather clipped.

  • 1990 Château Cheval Blanc 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Aromas of ripe maturing plum sweet tobacco. Wow, round supple and concentrated fruit yet silky and texturally complex. Long gorgeous finish. The best of the 90 trio tonight.

  • 1990 Château Haut-Brion 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

A real power house that isn't quite harmonious. Plum fruit with spice,, tobacco and bell pepper accents, and a hint of brett. Brooding.

  • 1990 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Powerful, brooding nose of dark plum with loads of graphite. So much concentrated, sweet delicious ripe fruit with tar and graphite accents. Long penetrating finish. Excellent but not at the highs of some bottles.

  • 1988 Château Haut-Brion 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Enticing, bright nose of plum with green herbs and bell pepper accents. Plenty of attractive, sweet and round fruit. A couple clicks below the 89s, but that's to be expected.

  • 1989 Château Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Nose bellows with big sweet plum and berries. Palate is so enveloping with it's gorgeous, pure fruit that is laced with sweet tobacco bell pepper. The structure is there but hardly noticeable - so seamless. On the young side of it's drinking window.

  • 1989 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Oh my, the most full and intense nose of the night with all that sweet plum fruit, sweet tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. Wowza, epic concentration yet composed. Incredible depth yet weightless.
