Introduction

A sampling of sakes to go with a yakitori lunch.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Hakuyou Brewery Rising Dragon Junmai Toryu 85 Points

    Japan, Tōhoku, Fukushima

This sake is as creamy as a nigori, it was quite a surprise. There is a definite sweetness, with a hint of melon, but there's some dryness at the end of this one too.

  • NV Housui Brewery Old Mountain Yamahai 78 Points

    Japan, Shikoku, Tokushima

A bit watery (not much flavour or mouth feel). On the dryer side, with some sour notes, but not much else.

  • NV Kubo Honke "Kimoto No Dobu" Ancient Clouds 75 Points

    Japan, Kansai, Nara

The dryness and mouth feel reminded me the most of sandpaper. I could get some notes of wild mint. The white and cloudy colour did not match my expectations for the flavour. There might be a context where this sake is appropriate, but I'm not sure what that is.

Closing

These were mostly dry sakes, and none I was familiar with. Not overly impressed.
