Introduction

One of our former Saturday group members, glitzysue, came back to town for a visit and so a small gathering was planned at one of our local BYOB restaurants. It's always great to spend time catching up with friends, and if the world were not small enough...as we walked in we were recognized by another of the restuarant's patrons that evening- thelostverse's brother, whom we haven't seen for a couple of years. So we had a chance to chat with he and his wife for a few minutes as well.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2022 Lewis Cellars Chardonnay Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Popped and poured. Deep straw yellow color with youthful green accents. Aromas of quince, ripe pear, apple and banana. Full-bodied with orchard fruit and barrel toast flavors. Tropical tones on the finish. The oak can often stand out and dominate in these Chards, but there’s plenty of fruit in this 2022. This just hit a sweet spot for me tonight. (R&D)

  • 2015 Faustini Secret Veil 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Double decanted a little over an hour before service. Notes of black cherry and currants with a perfumed, floral overtone. Pretty; elegant. Red berry fruit, currants and the "Rutherford dust" on the palate, with a silky texture and fine tannin structure. Nicely balanced. Leans ever so slightly in the old Napa style. Impressive. Our favorite of tonight's reds, with plenty of life ahead. Now with a decant, out to 2035, easily.

  • 2020 On Q Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Appassionata 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Double decanted off its sediment about 90 minutes before service. Darker color than the Faustini. Notes of black fruit, violet, blueberries and chocolate. Rich, slightly dense, with a mix of blue and black fruit, mocha and chocolate on the palate. Youthful structure, with medium tannins. I might give this a few years for the tannins to soften- there's plenty of fruit to last. No outward signs of the vintage's challenges that any of us could detect. Potential for some upside here; hold to 2028+.

  • 2020 Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Popped and poured, I believe. Aromas of cassis, barrel spice, currants and black licorice. Full-bodied and firm, as Lewis cabs tend to be, with an abundance of black fruit and oak influence. Hints of root beer in the finish. Nice, but needs some time to integrate the oak. From 2028+. (R&D)
