    Coming after the Koji, this is a maker that I've seen and tasted in small walkabout tastings but never had the chance for a proper sit down. Bouquet is pretty chiseled with dark plums, cloves, sandalwood and roses on display, palate has good stuffing and concentration albeit slightly edgey in a nervous energy kind of way - with more time in glass, this becomes more silky and finessed.

  • 2022 Domaine Koji et Jae Hwa Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Corvées 93 Points

    First to start off the evening, this has such a crazy and alluring bouquet that I could not get enough of all night. Definitely captured my heart here from the get go with the sensuality and lift - pomegranate, raspberries, rose water, sage and smoke on display here. Palate however a stark comparison from the bouquet, nice minerality but surprisingly thin and lean. With more time in glass, this put on some weight at the hour mark but quickly went downhill thereafter - not what I was expecting for 2022!

    Bouquet a little muted but with time cherry compote, strawberries, eucalyptus and cloves emerge with time. Palate oddly spritzy at the start with good concentration and weight but slightly underwhelming in this line up. Comparatively, this felt like it was on the fence/see-sawing between going old school and new school with a sense of indecisiveness - maybe the VV is better.

    This was something I was really looking forward to try. Was offered 3 bottles of this on release but somehow missed out on replying and taking the parcel down, since then this has gone up 5-6x on the secondary market - I can see why the market has gone in that direction though I am not too convinced why. Silky and smoky bouquet with dark plums, bayberries, aniseed, crushed stones and a slight beastly/savoury note. Palate for me marries the classic and traditional style with lifted and modernity - good tension and weight throughout with silky textures and finesse.

  • 2022 Kei Shiogai Gevrey-Chambertin 93 Points

    Last tried this bottle earlier this year (6 months ago). From the get go, spiced but shy bouquet showing cardamom, plums, mulberries and cedar. Palate has nice focus and tension with plenty of depth and silkiness. With more time, more layers and nuances emerge giving this a very round mouthfeel and good focus on the backplate. I've had the pleasure of trying Kei Shiogai a few times through the years now and the conclusion is that I'm not sure if I am a buyer and believer.

    2022 Prieure Rochs are pretty delicious. Classic and recognizable bouquet with stems, cloves, sage, cardamom, mulberries, incense smoke and lavender. Palate has wonderful stuffing, acidity and tension. Would be great to see how these develop over time

  • 2022 Millemann Wines Latricières-Chambertin 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

    One of those rare appearances. I must admit, I've only had a couple of bottles of Millemann but I quite enjoy these. Thought this was completely finessed from the bouquet and palate. Showing superb on the bouquet with lifted crushed red fruits, sage, aniseed, leather and mulberries. Palate so silky and finessed, what a treat!
