Flight 2 - Les Amoureuses (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Getting some aromatic expression and detail here. Perfume. Elegant. Good but this and Jadot are not comparable to the Groffier and Roumier in the flight. Actually, this is decent. Potential here.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Drouhin is superior to this. Tannic, dark, soily. Don’t care for this. Kind of hot too. Not very good.

  • 2005 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Excellent nose. Notably more expressive than other producers right now. Superior to Drouhin and Jadot by a mile. Flashy, sexy, bright, already has floral detail. Smells the best of the flight actually. Palate is integrating and is approachable now, much more so than the Roumier in the next glass which is still tightly coiled. More lift and perfume right now. Groffier showing very well at this retrospective across vineyards. 93 - 94.

  • 2005 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Bright red cherry. Sexy and racy. This is significantly bigger and more complete than the preceding Groffier, although less approachable right now. Fine palate already, darker berry fruit, not ready. Apparently under two barrels made of this. Very good but definitely wait. Darker, foresty, brooding. 94 - 96?

Flight 3 - Musigny (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Very quiet on the nose, hard to get a good read at first. Low projection / expression. Requires a lot of coaxing to get much right now. Palate is super clean and pure. I think that this will be quite good in time, like ten more years minimum. Circled back to this glass after three hours and it was much more detailed and expressive. 94-

  • 2005 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

This has some sort of pretty fruit compote on the nose. Somewhat candied. Palate is okay, some sappy richness. Brooding black fruit. Don’t hate it…

Flight 4 (6 Notes)

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Never heard of or seen this before. Warm, candied, lacquered red cherry.

  • 2005 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Looks pretty bright and clear in the glass for Meo. Smells great, a bit rustic, a bit wild. Has expression and detail already. Perfumed too. Really quite impressive. Cola spice. Excellent. Possibly / probably the wine of the flight. 94+

  • 2005 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Coming out flat. I don’t think sound / correct.

  • 2005 Sylvain Cathiard Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Big nose. Totally different from the Cathiard Malconsorts in the first flight. Hard to get a read on this. Palate is a bit better than the nose but still more extracted than I expected. Some kind of cranberry varnish that I don’t like. Palate a bit better. Malconsorts superior right now.

  • 2005 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Although big this nose is already very beautiful and expressive. Big projection. Savoury spice. Juicy red and black fruit. Wine of the flight. Lots of stuffing. Fine, pure, clean. Palate still too big right now. Spice and baking spice. Liked this more than I expected.

  • 2005 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Dark chai teas. A bit closed down. People seem to really like this wine but I would say too big for me.

Flight 5 (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Christophe Roumier Ruchottes-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Big nose with good projection. Bright raspberry and cherry fruit. Didn’t realize “ruchottes” means stones, I guess there is some minerality. Already elegant and detailed, I like it a lot, really good. Quite different from the Roumier Clos de la Bussieres and Amoureuses, more approachable now. Smiley face written in notes :) 94++

  • 2005 Domaine Alain Burguet Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Never heard of or seen this before. Smells great though, very floral. Straightforwardly delicious.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Meh, not very good. Jadot having a bad night.

  • 2005 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Again, Groffier showing really well tonight. Significantly more approachable and expressive than other producers at this stage. Expressive, floral, perfumed, very good. Drinkable now. Softer fruity palate. Already softening at the edges.
