Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Ulysse Collin Champagne Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut (2017) Les Maillons

    France, Champagne

Disgorged July, 2021. Medium pink, very few bubbles. Medium weight. Strawberry, citrus, adequate acidity, and a very good stony base. Very tasty, ready.

  • 2008 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Opened 6 hours before serving. Light ruby throughout. Pretty, high toned, slightly volatile aromatics with green elements and a squeeze of citrus that the other vintages did not have. Lovely, elegant weight and supple feel, delicate red fruit, lively acidity, and fine, slightly drying tannins. Open, very close to peak, and a pleasure to drink now.

  • 1999 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Opened 5 hours before serving. Ruby, a shade deeper than either the 2008 or 1998. Quite volatile to start with a whiff of overripe prune and a bit of funk, but the nose calmed down with more air. Medium weight, lean, dry feel, some nice red fruit, high acidity, and increasingly clenched tannins. By far the most mineral example. Wow, this really takes me back to classic Barolo from years gone by, slight flaws and all. I didn’t love it. Disappointing compared to a bottle 7 years ago that suggested great potential.

  • 1998 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Opened 5 hours before serving. Light ruby. Completely different nose than the other 2 years, thoroughly in the low pitched tar and tobacco register. Very layered and textural. The biggest and perhaps cleanest of the trio with black fruit, wonderful savory flavors, sappiness, soil, excellent acidity, and riper tannins. Not fully mature but so much more expressive than the only other time I drank it about 5 years ago. Dark cherry fruit welled up after 90 minutes. Perhaps not as fine as the 2008, but very complex mouthful of wine here. Excellent to outstanding and ultimately, my favorite of the trio.

Closing

Although nothing was wrong with any of the wines tonight, none of them got our hearts pounding as great Nebbiolo sometimes does.
