Introduction

These wines were part of a wine pairing with the set menu at the Antiqvvm restaurant in Porto. The restaurant has a terrace with a beautiful view of the river and Villa Nova de Gaia. With two Michelin stars, expectations were high.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2007 Vadio Perpetuum Bruto 91 Points

    Portugal, Beiras, Bairrada

Aperitif at Antiqvvm, Porto, Portugal. No formal notes. Medium golden colour. Apple, peach, red cherry, nuts, light honey, biscuit, bread crust, and brioche, with good, medium to medium(+) acidity, and very good length. I liked the harmonious flavor profile and how this sparkling wine has aged. Only, the mousse is comprised of rather big bubble and could be softer. Other than that, this is a very nice sparkling wine, and it paired very well with food.

Wine pairing at Antiqvvm, Porto, Portugal. No detailed notes. Medium amber colour. Apple, orange peel, green olive, crushed nuts, intense honey, caramel, and salt, with high acidity and very good length. Speaks of the sea. Fresh, almost seeming dry due to the high acidity.

The smoky and toasty oak mostly only shows on the finish. Medium-bodied, and well-balanced, with an oily texture. Good. In a great place.

Closing

The sommelier has put together a very interesting wine pairing, with some unusual choices.

I was bothered by the fact that the wines were always poured at the same time as the food was served and in very small quantities, so that you couldn't taste the wine before the course and then with the course. But the wine pairing itself was spot on.
