Introduction

Wonderful lunch organized and hosted by Acker. It was great to catch up with so many vigneron friends, plus meet new ones.

Flight 1 (41 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Rosé Edition 20eme 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Magnum. Lithe red berry aromas and flavors with a good punch on the finish. Very good power.

  • 2009 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Mature red cherry, faintly meaty with savory and sweet spice. Not nearly as great as several previous bottles from not too long ago.

  • 2022 Vigne Comte de Chapelle (Jean-Marie Fourrier) Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vieille Vigne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Rich and rounded ripe yellow apple, faintly tropical middle, ending with a bright finish. A rare Fourrier white, brought by Jean-Marie and Vicki. Very good now.

  • 1979 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Some madeira character to start with candied cherry and savory five spice coming through, but at least as much earth and underbrush. Palate is better than the nose, which seemed slightly more dirty. Not as exciting as my previous bottle, both bought in Beaune from the same source.

  • 2022 Vigne Comte de Chapelle (Jean-Marie Fourrier) Corton-Charlemagne Vieille Vigne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Small glass. Apple, lemon with a s=rich start, brighter middle. Good weight. better length. Also good young.

  • 2017 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Small glass. Black and red cherry comes across as plump to start, then brighter middle-to-finish. Long finish. Good now with upside from here.

  • 1989 Henri Magnien Ruchottes-Chambertin 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Some faintly lingering fruit, but all earth and more dirty than ideal.

  • 2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Small glass. Tough to assess, this seemed very tight and compact with black cherry and meat hiding in the background. Very good potential, this had been popped-and-poured, which didn't help.

  • 1988 Bernadette Peirazeau-Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small glass. Slightly dirty, but not too troublesome in that regard. Middleweight for its terroir, but mostly balanced and certainly enjoyable. I was told that Bernadette Groffier was Robert's sister, and these vines merged into what is now Domaine Peirazeau and mostly sold to negociants.

  • 2003 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass from magnum. Rich, black fruited, very meaty, very fun, very 2003 with good balance.

  • 2019 Bernard Dugat-Py Corton-Charlemagne Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Small glass. Dense and ripe apple and pear throughout, showing very good concentration with enough structure and then some more, so not fully showing its full range today. A wine I would want in the cellar, and spend an evening with a few years from now.

  • 2011 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Domaine Louis Jadot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Lean black cherry to start, then both black and red fruits on finish. Just enough concentration to show its Grand Cru pedigree, but very 2011 in its depth and ripeness.

  • 1976 Domaine Trapet Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Plump red and black cherry with some earth, still bright enough. Tannins are slightly too assertive, but otherwise very enjoyable.

  • 2002 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. All black fruits with roasted meat, maturing gracefully, perfectly balanced and harmonious. Not quite the heft I expected form this wine that I hoped would be great, but was just near great.

  • 2019 Domaine Duroché Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small glass. Probably my first time tasting a "next generation" Duroche Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, and it is just a puppy but impressive in its depth and richness, all the while displaying Gevrey muscle. Obviously needs time, but a great wine in the making here.

  • 2017 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Black cherry, plenty of spice. Clearly ripe and fun, but also very well balanced. Entering its peak drinking window young.

  • 2013 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Lighter than the 2017 with all black cherry elegantly styled. Good+ length and weight, but I expected it to pick up more weight when I tasted it pre-release. Still, very good and easy to enjoy.

  • 2019 Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Black and red cherry, ripe and plump while perfectly balanced. Seamless start-to-finish with good+ weight. So elegant. I haven't had many Dugat-Py wines from the new generation, and this is quite a style change.

  • 2001 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Small glass. Brought by Jean-Marie and Vicki. Fully mature black cherry flavors and aromas, well spiced and earthy. Very enjoyable, but certainly time to drink up.

  • 1979 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Good color and fill bought from a reputable local Beaune store. Ripe black fruits, fully ripe, earthy yet clean. Fully mature, elegant finish.

  • 2017 Jean-Marie Fourrier Chambertin Vieille Vigne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Directly from Fourrier. Elegant and perfectly balanced with lots here. Not the most powerful example of Chambertin, but this has a sneaky long and expanding finish I really enjoyed. Likely upside from here.

  • 2014 Domaine Trapet Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. I thought this wine fairly accessible when I tasted it just before its release, but today I felt the opposite. Big, dense and nearly coarse, yet with so much brooding stuff unhappy to be disturbed. Lots here, this needs more patience that most 2014s.

  • 2007 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Small glass. Magnum. And now for something completely different. Ripe apple, caramel apple, apple pie, so lots here, but ripe and certainly maturing . Fun but drink up.

  • 2012 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Really exceptional. Black fruits with a meaty core. Slightly brooding in the middle but otherwise near perfect balance. Ultra concentrated without losing its sense of extreme grace. One of today's absolute highlights. Great now, with upside from here.

  • 2005 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Ripe black plum and cherry with lots of power, still firm but easily accessible. Good now, better in the future.

  • 2018 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small glass. Real powerhouse of a wine with firm black fruits, just burly and backward for the foreseeable future. So much stuffing, I expect a 93-95 point wine to someday emerge, but not for at least another decade.

  • 2006 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small glass from magnum. Lush black and red cherry with softened tannins, close to ready, complexity emerging but more likely further upside as more comes through.

  • 1997 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Ripe black cherry and plum with nearly as much earth. Rich and nicely enjoyable but slightly lacking in freshness, so near the end of its peak drinking window.

  • 1992 Domaine Joseph Roty Mazy-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. This exceeded my expectations by far. Riper black fruit than I ever imagining from this vintage, balanced with a small dollop of earth and enough structure just in the near background for vey good balance, and clearly showing Grand Cru density.

  • 1978 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Small glass. So here was a rare treat and I am guessing it is a combination of Cazetiers and Lavaux St. Jacques. Rich black fruits, just more earth than fruit, and the fruit has the faint sweetness of fully mature Burgundy. Immaculately clean and with enough 1er Cru concentration, this is very easy to enjoy.

    Corky?

  • 1999 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small glass. Backward, firm, awkward, fruit seemingly stripped? Nowhere close to the profile of previous bottles from the recent past.

  • 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Small glass. Black and red cherry still nicely fresh, good richness, faint spice. Good Grand Cru density. Not fading any time soon.

  • 1986 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Small glass. Ultra rich with so much density and nearly unctuous textures. Mostly mature flavors but not even close to tired, this is a wine of great balance and grace. Brilliant right now.

  • 2021 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Reserve 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Gippsland

Small glass. Lots of red cherry and berry in a clearly New World style showing off richness and some candy. But silky elegant textures carry this forward to a very long finish that is so graceful it nearly says "thank you." It was difficult to recalibrate for this wine from older Burgundy, so I might be vastly underestimating this wine.

  • 2011 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Lean black fruits, not very fresh and also a bit awkward.

  • 2017 Bernard Dugat-Py Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass, this was one of the most difficult wines to assess in the context of this Paulee style event. A graceful wine of amazing elegance, perfect balance, and charming red & black cherries, but reticent and reluctant at the same time without the firm tannins I typically associate with young Chambertin in its awkward phase. The Chambertin intensity isn't there yet, but how/ when/ will it emerge is a very fair question. I truly liked this wine and was intrigued by it. In fact, it was one of today's wine I'd most like to try again someday in a more thoughtful setting.

  • 2013 Domaine Tortochot Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Ripe enough black cherry with good weight, good+ length, nothing out-of-place, just nothing very exciting. Good now

  • 2012 Domaine Trapet Chambertin Flawed

    Completely stripped of fruit

  • 2016 Domaine Trapet Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Bright black and red cherry to start, more backward towards it finish. Good density, this will reward cellar time, 92-93 point potential.

  • 2004 Domaine Trapet Chambertin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass. Less interesting aromas are pale, more interesting flavors more dense and very Gevrey. Ok overall.
