Introduction

A chance to try a couple of bottles from this relatively new Napa distributor/importer. Darn, no Dujac today!

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Medium yellow. Some toasty oak and ripe fruit on the nose. Full, pineapply, and deficient in acidity. Pretty much follows the '06 formula, one that is none too appealing or interesting to me.

  • 2006 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

A shade lighter than the village wine. Finer, less ripe, and slightly better etched, with at least a hint of youthful austerity, but does not scream out Premier Cru quality. Nothing special.

  • 2005 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réserve

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium red with some lightening. Nice mixture of olive, garrigue, and dark fruit. Medium bodied, fresh acidity, well tamed tannins for the vintage. Fruit is downplayed here. A wine of savory complexity and good balance rather than power. Classic in some respects, but it if anything, it is too retrained and could use more depth of fruit. Would not buy at the current price.

  • 2005 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Fiancée

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Two shades darker and deeper than the Reserve. Licorice and blackberry aromatics. Again, rather elegant medium body, but the Syrah component gives it a much more solid core of dark fruit. More tannic and less herbal than the Reserve. Of the two Barroche wines, I preferred this one, although the trade off here is sacrificing a little complexity in favor of more fruit. Very good rendition of southern Rhone Syrah.

  • 2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Light tawny color. Surprisingly advanced on the nose, already extremely pretty with gentle fruit, dried flowers, and underbrush. Much more locked up on the palate-lean with light to medium body, not much fruit, and strong framing acids. I tasted this right out of the bottle and have to believe that its potential is better demonstrated by its beautiful Nebbiolo aromatics than the closed flavors. Will never be a sweet, lush wine though.

Closing

Certainly not the full range of their wines, so not fair to generalize, but with the exception of the scent of the Barolo, nothing wowed me.
