Lay Wheeler Tasting - Saatchi Gallery

Tasted Thursday, November 6, 2025 by Darbus123 with 66 views

Introduction

Small pours in a glass that featured a lot of different wines, not much time with each wine, no food etc. So not ideal tasting conditions and I did not take detailed notes so this is really just impressions of the wines.

Generally a very disappointing tasting but that is good news for my wallet. The burgundy in particular, both white and red, was almost entirely completely out of whack with short and hot finishes.

Tasted maybe 40 wines in total, a few notes below but I wasn't excited by any of the offerings tonight.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2022 Lismore Chardonnay Estate Reserve 86 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Overberg, Greyton

A diabolical wine for me, some nuts and tropical fruit on the nose but weirdly chemical and the palate is short and unenjoyable. Completely out of whack. My guest disliked this even more than me, which is saying something.

  • 2020 Château Tronquoy 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

For me one of the best reds on display tonight, even though its way too young. Supple fruit, nice acidity, really well made with lovely fine tanins. Let this sleep

  • 2020 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Stunning nose, just a bit short and unbalanced in the finish, but this was a very small pour. Behind the 2018 and 2019 for me based on this tasting

  • 2016 Château Batailley 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Generally i have found 2016s to be of such wonderful quality that they can be drunk now, but in this case the finish was just a bit hot, even if the fruit is superb. I would give this 5 years before trying a bottle. It will ultimately have a very long window

  • 2022 Olivier Leflaive Saint-Romain Blanc 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Romain

    Lay Wheeler Portfolio tasting

I tasted 4 white Burgundies at this event, all of them were woefully disappointing. In this case thin, disinteresting and short. If you factor in the price i am afraid this is one to avoid.

  • 2020 Querciabella Batàr 88 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Lay Wheeler Portfolio tasting

Possibly a product of a tired glass at this point, but I'm afraid this tasted remarkably dull. The nose was equally muted, maybe some white flowers. A bit of minerality on the palate but nothing to be excited about, especially for the price.

  • 2020 Château Montlandrie 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Good value, drinking quite nicely but a bit short and hot. With so much Bordeaux available at the moment I would look elsewhere

  • 2022 Justin Girardin Santenay Vieilles Vignes 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay

    Lay Wheeler Portfolio tasting

All over the place with oak sticking out and a short, hot finish that leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth. I can't see this improving. Hard to believe this comes from Burgundy
