Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1998 Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana IGT 85 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Secondary aromas of dried flowers, leather, mushroom/earth. Still very tannic on the palate, but showing some dark fruit. Short-moderate finish. I really don't have much hope for the fruit hanging on long enough for the tannins to resolve. Drink now.

  • 2000 Dante Rivetti Barbaresco Bricco de Neueis Riserva 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Medium-ruby colour. Aromas of violets, spice, licorice, plums, and cherries. Medium-full bodied, lovely texture and acidity. Nice fruit replays from the palate and a hint of peach from the wood treatment that should integrate with cellaring. Needs 3-5 years in the cellar. Revisit 2011-2013, and should drink well for many years after that.

  • 2005 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Exceptionnelle 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark ruby colour. Beautiful nose of kirsch, raspberry, flowers, alcohol, and herbes de Provence. Full-bodied, lush, with great fruit and structure. Good length on the finish also. Really nice, and should age really well. This should get even better with age. Leave this alone for at least 5 years.

  • 1998 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino 89 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Popped and poured. Dark ruby colour. Aromas of vanilla, spice, dark fruit - black plums in particular. Restrained on the palate with some minerals and dark fruit. Good finish, ~30s with replays from the nose and palate. Could use a good amount of slow-oxygenation or better yet, another 1-2 years in the cellar. Drink now-2014.
