Introduction

Teruyo and Kazuya in town. Brought a couple of wines from home and picked a couple of things of lists.

Flight 1 - Olimpico (1 Note)

  • 2021 Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 91 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico

Popped and poured. Drank over 2 days and improved over that period.

Medium lemon appearance. M+ intensity nose. Primary aromas of apple, pear, lemon peel. Floral and herbal with blossom, jasmine, white pepper, ginger, fennel, sage Stony mineral notes also prominent with some almond character. Dry. High acid. M+ body with some textural richness evident in line with the Batonage. M alcohol. M+ flavour intensity. M+ finish with a pleasing bitterness.

Very good quality. The wine superbly balances freshness and purity with power and complexity. I think the higher % of additional Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio) shows in the complex, herbal bitterness of this wine. Why not outstanding? The intensity and length just fall a little short for me but I do need to try these blind to see if my view changes.

VALUE: Paid USD$22 in my local supermarket. Excellent value. The Pieropan Soave Classico is excellent value in its own right but this is well worth the incremental cost.
No problem to drink now but this should improve. Personally, I’m stashing a selection to drink over the next 5-10 years of age when I think additional complexity will have developed.

Flight 2 - Tekken (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Deep garnet appearance. Pronounced intensity nose. Primary aromas of red cherry, red plum, dark cherry. Secondary aromas of nutmeg, toast. Tertiary aromas of dried plum, dried cherry, leather, smoked meat, barbecued ribs. High acid, high tannin that is now velvety and fully integrated, full body, pronounced intensity, long finish. Outstanding.

I'd underestimated this wine! This has really come on in the last few years and is now absolutely at peak. Not sure how or why but some of the balance issues seem to have resolved and is now drinking beautifully. Could hold for some more years for a different expression but I don't see it improving from here.

Medium ruby appearance. Medium intensity nose of cherry, red plum, tomato leaf, blackcurrant leaf, violet, rosemary, dried herbs. Medium+ acid, medium tannin, high alcohol that just shows a little heat on the backend. Medium+ body flavour intensity and finish. Very good quality.
