Introduction

After the Riesling challenge we popped back to Jordans to get ready for supper and had a little glass of something then I was blind taste tested...

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2019 Celler del Roure Vermell

    Spain, Valencia

Jubey red hued fruits and mineral notes and this is very much reflected on the palate, minerality lends a stoney tug to the tongue, pretty red fruits. Nice.

  • 2024 Fourth Wave Wine Partners Shiraz Plus & Minus

    Australia, South Australia

    Served blind.
Berry fruit compote, some saline notes, savoury notes, touches of tomato leaf and rhubarb. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury and funky, a little blueberry, silky tannic burr, skinny, something off here. It feels like a Somm wine - no oak, no whole bunch but early harvest for acid and low alcohol, minimal sulphur, it's a bit dirty...it has pinot/gamay lightweight style but isn't those varietals...Odd and not very pleasant.

  • 2024 Colterenzio Schreckbichl St. Magdalener

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, St. Magdalener

    Served blind.
Pretty, cherry, lightweight, a little savoury underpin, mineral, tiny red liquorice note on the nose. Juicy acidity is super fresh, tannins are tacky and supportive, behind this a little savoury underpin, a little ripe stalky note, long balanced. Utterly charming and totally smashable at 15-17C. 3-5 years old, not an international varietal. Northern/cool climate, 13%? Schiavi? Lagrein? Guessed St Magdalener (because we'd been chatting northern Italy)

  • 2023 Gino Pedrotti Schiava Nera Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

    Served blind.
Wood glue, initial splash of red cherry compote with a touch of sour snakes, floral top notes. Touch of fruit tea. Juicy acidity, those cherry notes again, less sour on the palate, coarse flor textured tannins are slightly bitter, cherry stone bitterness in fact. Non intrusive alcohol warmth. Feels Italian and off the beaten path again. Perhaps Piedorosso? Young.

  • 2020 Celler del Roure Valencia Safrà

    Spain, Valencia

    Served blind.
Initially slight raisins, oak spice, saovury meaty notes, chalky minerality, touches of barbecue and baked earth then plums, a little earth, alcohol prickle. Medium plus intensity acidity, medium plus intensity tannins are drying, savoury, grainy and sit on the mid palate, plenty of dark hued fruits, quite broad, fair lick of alcohol warmth, tiny touch of bitterness on the long finish ably assisted in that by the alcohol warmth, the acid lends a sense of wet diluteness despite the concentrated, fruit, tannins and alcohol on the palate. Interesting, If this is Italian I have no idea where it is from.

  • 2020 Celler del Roure Valencia Parotet

    Spain, Valencia

And this smells like the middle ground between the (ripe and powerful) Safra and the (mineral and lighter fruited) Vermell. Ripe red cherry and plums fruits, mineral and dusty earthy notes, almost a little garrigue. Juicy, flesh, medium plus intensity acidity, a touch dilute, cherry, grainy mineral tannins have a slightly rocky quality and persist long. Alcohol warmth makes itself present on the finish. that garrigue note is more muted on the palate, long, Kind of nice.
