  • 2008 Remoissenet Père et Fils Le Montrachet 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Thought this was a better showing than the domaine grapes. Complexed bouquet showing off hibiscus, nashi pear, lemon oil, wisps of smoke, chalk and jasmine. Palate shows off a some oak but nothing too overbearing - with powerful underlying fruit showing off superb density and concentration. This is true power and finesse! I thought this was a montrachet initially but we were given hints that these 2 bottles were from the same appellation and I was swayed. Darn it.

  • 2007 Domaine Thenard Montrachet 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Kicking off the evening really well with a pair of Montrachets. This had power, depth and concentration - but I felt this didn’t have that completeness that would render it to be a Montrachet. However with time, these actually got much better! Bouquet shows off lychee, lime zest, jasmine, starfruits and straw. Palate is has power and minerality with heft and definition. Guess 2011 Batard for this.

  • 2004 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Flawed

    Served in the same flight as the Ramonet, I can only describe this as another reason not to keep white burgundies around for too long 😭 You guessed it…
    Bouquet showing signs of fragility with honeysuckle, barley, roasted corn husks, pineapples and starfruits. Palate is a bit advanced which is a shame because this was showing just how magical it could have been with underlying density and concentration.

  • 2004 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    The recurring thought in my mind as I had this was, “THIS is why we chase white burgundy”. I’ve had many a-ha moments like this from the gent that generously shared this bottle and I am incredibly thankful. Striking bouquet showed off chalk, spearmint, straw, hibiscus, grapefruit and lotus seed on the back palate with hints of corn custard and white peaches shining through. Palate has intensity and tension while being supple and flamboyant. Loads of finesse here and just a stunning bottle!

    Enjoyed this loads more. Ripe and juicy bouquet showing off plums, macerated cherries, orange peel, hawthorn, stewed tomato, white pepper and cigar smoke. Palate has sweetness and complexity, together with the kind of silkiness and softness that comes with age - a really lovely expression!

  • 2015 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 88 Points

    A really strange bottle. None of us picked up that this was burgundy because of how strangely this was showing. Bouquet had a tinge of sage and eucalyptus admist a backdrop of capsicums, sweet cherries, red apples compote and pepper. Palate abit too sweet, concentrated, dense and edgey. This has to be a factor of major bottle variation and bad luck.

  • 1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 97 Points

    Sexy and the most complete wine of the evening. With precision, finesse and power in spades. Alluring bouquet of black plums, morello cherries, mulberries, incense, sadle, cloves and aniseed. Palate pitch perfect concentration, with finesse and power in perfect balance. Persistent waves and waves of power and sensuality - this is peak burgundy, nothing more to be said. What an enjoyable treat!

  • 1995 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Fantastic showing and no slouch next to the Rousseau Beze. Silky and age-appropriately sensual with a stunning bouquet of sage, eucalyptus, violets, mulberries, bayberries, cardamon and aniseed. Palate is silky and finesse, with a sense of completeness that fills out and expands on the mid-palate. Very much resolved at this stage and the a-ha moment for me was the balance between fruit and tannins here - fruit calm and juicy while tannins were soft and silky. Possibly one of the most balanced expressions of 1995 I’ve had till date.
