LdC Musigny Dinner

The Lieux-dits-Cru got together on a cool Monday evening in Chicago to taste Musigny. Aside from the blind whites, these were served open. As a lover of Miusigny, I was pretty excited by the prospect of this tasting, though looking at the actual wines (and more importantly, vintages), I had a nagging fear that we would be in for a disappointment. Turns out my fear was unfounded as virtually all the wines showed as well or better than I would have guessed (maybe it was a fruit day!) Anyway a great tasting with several real highlights for me. CH did a great job as usual.

• 1988 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  A wonderful mature champagne drinking at or near it's peak. Great complex mature flavors but still plenty of zip and life left here. Wondful with the canapes.

• 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

  Popper and poured, this wine could have used more air as it opened up considerably in glass. Pale white color. Forward nose of mineral, white fruit, and pronouced oak (that integrated better with some time). Nice rich white fruit on the palate with the oak much better integrated. Definitely still youthful, but nice and vigorous.

• 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

  Medium yellow color, showing a bit of evolution compared to the 99 Chevy next to it - winemaking or bottle variation? Medium nose of rich yellow fuit with a hint of spice. Medium white and yellow fruit on the palate with lots of zingy acidity and a hint of gunflint. Again, this one opened up with air.

  Lovely floral red cherry nose with a hint of spice and perfume notes - spactacular red burg nose! Silky mouthfeel with round earthy red cherry and good bracing acidity. Long round firm finish with hints of iron and shitake/umami. Incredible complexity. This just oozes great red burgundy and screams Musigny. WOTN. 96-97 pts.

  Another wonderful Jadot Musigny. Very nice spicy red cherry nose with hints of black fruit and even a touch of green pepper(?) Younger more black fruit focused cherry with a few angles but a very nice wine. Good acidity here as well.

  Full deep red/purple color. Forward nose of black fruit with nail polish hints at first and then floral notes emerging. Nice red/purple fruit on the palate with som structure remaining. There was some support for this to be WOTF, but not for me.

  Full red color. Mmmn, huge sweet red cherry brown sugar nose - really lovely. Wonderful sweet red cherry fruit on the palate - round, balanced, floral and just giving up everything. Nice long but round soft finish. A picture of femininity. I love this style of Burgundy and this is exactly what I look for in Musigny, but a couple other very experienced tasters liked some of the more structured examples better.

• 1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

  Full deep black/red color. Big nose of tight black fruit with iron notes - it has a distinctive Vogue brawny nose IMHO. Big bold tight black fruit with a light sweet note but also black earth. Long structured finish. As usual, the Vogue needs more time, but this one has really good potential. 93-94 pts.

  Lovely black fruit nose with a hint of acidity. Still a little tight on the fruit - didn't have a ton of air and probably would have benefited. Black fruit driven with good stuffing, but still painfully young.

  Lighter red color. Tight black fruit nose with an acidic high-toned note. Mmmn, nice black/red fruit on the palate with just a hint of sweetness. Very nice - still somewhat young.

  Full deep red color. Full red/black lifted nose - tight but nice floral notes too. Full cassis black fruit on the palate with a surprisingly round finish. Nice, but will benefit greatly from time.

• 2003 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 89 Points

  This was a ringer because it was supposed to have some (3 buckets) of Musigny in the blend... Clearly outclassed in this company, especially given that it was an 03. Full deep black/red color. Full supperipe porty black fruit nose. Young tight black fruit on the palate with puckering tannin and acidity. Long tight finish with coffee notes - would have thought this was syrah blind. Not a bad wine per se, but stood out in a Musigny tasting...
