Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1986 Mildara Alexanders

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Still deep dark garnet. Rich blackcurrant and cassis nose, soft oak. Gentle powdery tannins, medium weight at best. Seems prematurely aged given its appearance.

  • 1988 Tahbilk Marsanne

Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Nagambie Lakes

Deep gold. Honeyed nose, honeysuckle palate, but still dry at all times. Oakless, always ripe and rich medium weight and medium length finish. Lovely wine.

  • 1986 Bleasdale Cabernet Sauvignon Mulberry Tree

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

Brick red with an amber tint. Stewed, jammy nose with quite a hint of earth. Drying out on the palate towards a short finish. Past best, if still just drinkable.

  • 1978 Penfolds Shiraz-Cabernet Bin 622 magill, Barossa, Coonawarra Flawed

    Australia, South Eastern

Distinct amber rim. Earthy and farmyard on the nose – distinct volatility. Bitter, drying and fruitless finish. Too old.

  • 1985 Château Sociando-Mallet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Bright in colour and aromas. Classic medoc, great balance of ripe red fruit and oak, medium weight at most, but elegant and polished with a medium/long finish. Very good, with time left still for improvement.

  • 1982 Château la Terrasse

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

Turning amber-coloured. Aged nose of cigar box and coconut. Fruit has faded away on the palate; the finish may be balanced but it’s very short and not interesting. Past best.

  • 1982 Lindeman's Shiraz - Cabernet Limestone Ridge Vineyard

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Red hue, turning amber. Old aussie nose of massive fruit sweetness; all about stewed jam and ripe shiraz. Hint of earth gives the age away. At peak, drink up.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Solid garnet. Lifted red/currant fruit with some aged characters. Strong powdery tannins, plenty of acid, ripe fruit presence along with a cedary character. Excellent balance along the tongue, medium/long finish. In great shape.

  • 1983 Penfolds Grange

    Australia, South Australia

Still ruby/black colour. Massive ripe black fruit and fine, grainy tannins along with coconut oak flavours. Thick and chocolatey, with an inky blackness to it. Still long away from ready to drink; a decade at least.

Solid yellow, not quite gold. Terrific acid to balance the sweetness, plenty of botrytis, medium length and intensity. In great shape.
