  • 2017 Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes Blanc Domaine Gagey 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

    As earlier this year, a broad wine that's extremely easy to enjoy. Lots to enjoy on the nose - biscuit, green fruit, vetiver, icing sugar - and the palate is just as pleasurable, tasting distinctly of lemon curd. There's a little more minerality on the finish, but for me this wine felt (like many 2017 whites) at peak, with any more time in bottle potentially going to end up with a wine lacking tension. But that felt like a minority view around the table!

  • 2020 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Lithe and reduced, especially when drunk with the Guettes. Sinous and smoky, energetic, with a delightful touch of cream behind; I loved the smokiness. The finish was long, stony and classy. I put this a hair ahead of its flight-mate but I don't think anyone else agreed...

Flight 3 - Fresh pasta, oyster mushroom, mushroom velouté (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 93 Points

    Both more fruit and more tertiary goodness than the Theurons; it's a well-balanced wine. Sensual, with some unusual notes (for a red Burg, at least) like lemon zest and cola, and more overtly tertiary characteristics such as truffle and pine needle. There's a good weight of attractive cherry fruit too, although the wine lost a bit of energy in the glass. Still giving a lot of pleasure, then, but I don't think it'll get any better from here.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Theurons Domaine Gagey 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Rather dark, especially by comparison with the '99 Couch. It's an interesting nose, with peat smoke, mushroom and barnyard. The palate is elegant and metallic, with crisp acidity, a hint of something biscuity and a lingering finish. Felt right in the zone from my perspective, and may improve. I can't decide whether I prefer this wine's terrier-like energy or the comfortable armchair of the older wine, but either way it was another great flight.

Flight 4 - Duck breast, charred cabbage, red wine jus (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Deep on the nose, with some Gevrey-esque iron, but airy at the same time. Powdery and pure juicy red fruit on the refreshing palate. Well-resolved and not too green. I enjoyed this very much, although it didn't show grand cru quality and wasn't especially popular around the table.

  • 2011 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Domaine Louis Jadot 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Succulent, lifted fruit, with a Barolo-esque hint of austerity. Fruit coulis on the palate, maybe a hint of cherry pie, and a crisp finish. Again no hint of 2011 greenness, and not really grand cru quality - but fun in its own right.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Ruchottes-Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Backup to the 1997 - thanks Steve! Soft, gamey nose, mineral and gently smoky. Classy on the palate, stony but not too austere, bright and succulent, weighty and complete. There's an unusual note of pickle juice, too! Much better showing than when I first tried it a few years ago.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    Ripe nose, although not lacking in definition... but I would have liked more energy. Lots of slightly blocky fruit on the palate, a touch of smoke and of something savoury, then bright on the finish; but it can't escape its bigness and fruitiness.

Flight 6 - Cheeses (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Lots going on when smelled: spicy lift, gentle and elegant, a touch of cut grass, a sense of soul. Not very full-bodied on the palate, which was harmonious, powdery, dark-fruited and right on the cusp of turning gamey. Arguably could have done with more fruit (and what fruit there was, was rather raisiny), but this impressed and edged the battle of the off-vintage CSJs.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Griotte-Chambertin 93 Points

    Inky and austere nose, though with good energy. Plentiful juicy fruit on the palate, crisp and detailed, with a touch of Turkish delight. Another lovely wine, but less characterful than its flight-mates.

  • 2001 Louis Jadot Chambertin 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    A fitting finale - the vineyard obviously generates expectation, and '01s always seem to perform. It's a dark, brooding wine even at age 24, with evident stature. The nose is earthy, even muddy, and also soars with exotic incense. On the palate there's a draught of high-quality red fruit and a sense of completeness. Not an especially big or attention-grabbing wine, but I think we all felt it was the best one we drank tonight.

Closing

I'm torn about this; on the one hand, the average quality of the wines was very high, but on the other I don't think any of reds actually brought me much joy, with the probable exception of the first Cote de Beaune flight. Fully mature wines from good vintages > flashier vineyards from more boring vintages, I guess...

The food was really good though - no question about that.
