Christmas WIMPS

A wonderful lunch. Great company on Forrest Gump,!the conversation flowed all afternoon. The food was on top form.
All the wines preformed so well, no duds, no is that okay? So privileged to be able to attend these events.

• 1998 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

  France, Champagne

  Deep gold colour very light bubbles. Mature, mushroom, umami yet bright acidity. Really good start, just how I like my bubbly.

• 1996 Verget Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vieilles Vignes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

  Resolved, rich honey notes, oatmeal and hint of vanilla. No worries about the condition, but in the later part of its life and fruit is fading. I think this a cracking mature burgundy, a comfy sofa wine.

• 2020 Azores Wine Company Terrantez do Pico

  Portugal, Açores, Vinho Regional Açores

  A deep colour, lightly golden, quite festive. Ripe pears, melon fruit, bright and Lingering finish. Never had this grape before and this is certainly something to enjoy. My white of the lunch.

• 2017 I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Carricante Etna Vigna di Milo Caselle

  Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

  This is so different to the previous whites, greener, more linear. Sherry notes to start, mineral palette, green apple fruit come through with air. A complex, long and very enjoyable wine.

• 2012 Passopisciaro Sicilia Contrada Porcaria

  Bright cherry colour as all these have. A high tone,ripe raspberry and pomegranate, long. A complex wine.

• 2012 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Guardiola

  Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

  A touch deeper coloured. A bramble edge to the raspberry fruit. Maybe an edge of something volcanic? Lovely. Sit in the middle physically and quantify.

• 2012 Passopisciaro Terre Siciliane Contrada Guardiola

  This seems up a notch of the other two in the flight. Sweeter, richer, yet clean long on the finish. The fruit verges to cherry flavour bubblegum which in this case is lovely.
  The pick here by a whisper.

• 2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

  You now when class arrives, it’s here today.
  Everything in place, beautiful syrah fruit, hints of blood and chopping block, concentrated black fruit.
  Still a little tight but certainly drinking well. A delight.

• 1997 M. Chapoutier Ermitage l'Ermite

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

  So much more savoury and sweet than the Chave. Steeped cherry, tobacco and secondary notes. Long.
  From a magnum, this is lovely and whilst quantitatively a less classic wine, I kept coming back. Great drinking and a great pleasure.

• 1988 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg

  France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

  Sweetness and savoury notes in balance. Autumn apples, sweet and bruised. This is lovely and a great joy. But perhaps not the best with Christmas pudding, although there’s a cinnamon note with matches the ice cream.

Thanks to the staff, Don and all my table and lunch room mates.
I haven’t scored the wines that seems unfair with such an array. Just for the nativity lunch everyone is a winner.
