Introduction

A special dinner with Burgundy lovers from far and wide.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

An odd bottle that was showing more tired than prior bottles and experiences. Air didn't help the cause.

  • 2002 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Late Release 94 Points

    France, Champagne

For me, the best of the three 02s (Krug, Cristal, Salon) for drinking right now. So bright, pure and seamless with plenty left in the tank. Not showing much in the way of tertiary at all.

  • 2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

This bottle was more or less PnP and didn't get much / enough air to shine. What we got to taste was dense and chockfull of powerful fruit but was a bit chunky and wound up. Even that was great, but this needs some air or time to hit it's best.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Initially tighter but opens with air to show candied orchard fruit with significant concentration. Richly fruited but impeccably balanced. Early peak drinking.

  • 2018 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Ripe and flashy nose dazzles. Palate is so dense and concentrated with ripping acidity that adds freshness and lift. Early but so darn delicious already.

  • 2019 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Wow, smoke show of nose that is incredibly intense and enthralling. Fruit is so pure and crystalline. Hard to process how powerful yet seamless this wine is. Young but giving so much already.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Reductive nose and therefore somewhat modest and clunky aromas. Palate is a different story - oh my, so concentrated with electric acidity. Long, long finish. Man, just starting to show how great this will be. Upside from here.

  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Wow, bright intense and incredibly layered nose. Holy sh*t - like the 2014 but with another gear. Amazing concentration and simply electric leading to a weightless and chiseled finish. Upside to perfection from here.

  • 2020 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

A lot like the 14 and 17 in the same flight. It has the same concentration, stuffing, bright acidity and length, but at this stage just ever so slightly reserved. Incredible none-the-less.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

Flight 6 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Something felt not right here with fruit that was roasted and even a bit stewed.

  • 1999 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

This is a wine that commands your attention and focus. Still quite young and therefore evolving in the glass. Sexy black cherry and Vosne spice, but not overtly flashy. Long, sleek finish. Clear upside from here.

  • 2002 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Wow, effusive and flashy nose. Palate is similarly intense and generous. Grand Cru concentration through and through with suave textures. Layers of black cherry, black tea and spice. Long finish.

  • 2002 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Ethereal black cherry aromas with sexy spice that is intense yet subtle and not flashy. A monument of a palate that is so statured and steady. The more you focus, the more there is to admire in this wine. Long as can be. Wow.

Flight 7 (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Pure, fresh cut cherry aromas are pure. Bright, energetic palate with pure red fruit and spice. Mid weight with plenty of fun spice. This has some modest upside but drinking well already.

  • 2008 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Oh my, aromas are deep and layered -- sexy black cherry so sexy with subtle spice. Rather dense, wound-up and statured even after 6+ hours in a decanter. Plenty of upside from here.

  • 2010 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Wowza, intense crunchy red fruit and spice for days in the nose. Palate is decadent and so alluring with big bold spice. Wide open and inviting.

  • 2010 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Holy cow - the nose is full of sexy red and black cherry and spice in a baritone and somehow low key fashion. Fruit on the palate is sensual and inviting but still has a tension between the fruit and structure that needs time to resolve. So great but with upside from here.
