First Visit to Iconic Pomerol Estate: Château La Conseillante

On our third day exploring the right bank of Bordeaux in October 2025, my wife Dio and I visited Château La Conseillante in Pomerol. Nelly Richard (Responsable commerciale & relations publiques) led us through an extensive tour of the vineyards and cellars, sharing the estate's 300-year history and modern winemaking approach. The visit concluded with a tasting of two vintages - including a blind tasting that showcased how approachable young La Conseillante can be.

• 2024 Château La Conseillante 96 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

  First visit to Château La Conseillante in Pomerol with my wife Dio and Nelly Richard. The 2024 blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This was a challenging vintage with one of the lowest yields the estate has produced - just 22 hectoliters per hectare compared to their usual 38, representing only about 25,000 bottles versus their typical 40,000-45,000 bottles. The harvest came much later than 2025's record-early August 28th picking. Despite the difficult growing season, Nelly explained this vintage will be drinking earlier than others, with secondary and tertiary aromas developing within seven to eight years rather than the recommended 10-year wait for most La Conseillante vintages. Blue fruit on the nose. Fresh ripe fruit on the palate with beautiful balance. The best young wine of the trip so far. While 2024 presents a classic style, the wine's approachability as an En primeur sample demonstrates how the estate crafts wines that can be enjoyed much younger than traditional Bordeaux.

• 2019 Château La Conseillante 94 Points

  First visit to Château La Conseillante in Pomerol with my wife Dio and Nelly Richard. Served blind during our tasting - I guessed 2015. The estate ages their wines for 16 months in 70% new oak barrels and 30% one-year-old barrels, using traditional racking à l'esquive three times during aging - a gentle old-fashioned method that filters the wine throughout the process, allowing them to minimize filtration before bottling. They sell 90% of their production En primeur, with the remaining 10% kept for visitors and private events, which explains the limited availability of La Conseillante in restaurants and wine stores. Nelly poured this vintage to demonstrate how approachable young La Conseillante wines have become, explaining that 2019 is a vintage they love drinking now because it's showing exceptionally well. Apple pie on the nose. Red fruit and strawberry on the palate with medium tannins. Drinking well now while retaining significant aging potential.
