Introduction

Typical Tuesday night blind tasting event with some great wines shared and a few duds.

Flight 1 - Starter Wine (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Blinded Wine Event (8 Notes)

  • 2015 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tasted blind. My initial impression was that this could be Grenache/CdP due to the slightly medicinal/liqueur flavor profile. Beyond that initial impression, it had a sweet & sour note with a prickly drying finish that led me to Nebbiolo. The color is definitely Pinot/Nebbiolo high toned red wine. Maybe this will get better in the cellar with more age?

  • 2006 Fattoria Le Pupille (Elisabetta Geppetti) Saffredi

    Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana

Tasted blind. Wow. Great fruit concentration with a long finish. Equal parts black & red fruit with a great nose. Semi-sweet Cabernet Sauv. fruit on the tight grippy finish. I called it 2015 Ornellaia.

  • 2015 Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Rich, slurpy candied cherry fruit. Borderline sexy and exotic. That said, not to be confused with a new world Pinot Noir. This is definitely a great Burgundy from a terrific producer. That said, it is just too young and needs another 5-10 years in the cellar to truly show everything that it's got. A great, but primary wine!

  • 2014 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Unbelievable nose. Could smell it all night long. The incredible nose is rivaled by a deliciously long finish of bright red cherry mineral laced fruit. High acidity suggests a long life ahead. Such a wonderful wine. Nearing perfection!

  • 1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì Tildìn

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Tasted blind. Slightly cloudy red translucent color. Lovely nose, slight sweetness on the finish but a leaner, tannic finish.

  • 2003 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tasted blind. Elegant fruit with some richness on the backend, expressive nose with a grip on the finish. Sour cherry with a touch of oak. Tough to discern between Nebbiolo and Sangiovese blinded.

  • 1998 Château Haut-Brion Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Corked. So disappointing.

  • 2009 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Tasted blind. Interesting wine when tasted blind. Originally, I thought this was N. Rhone, but then the group swayed me into thinking this was Bordeaux. It doesn't scream, "I am a Syrah from Cornas" when tasted blind.

Flight 3 - Backup Wines (4 Notes)

  • 2014 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Rosé Emotion

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Tasted blind. Delicious rose-colored bubbles. So much so, I purchased a few bottles afterwards.

  • 2011 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Last tasted January 2025. I do not like this wine. It is a glass full of "greeny meanies". So much green, stemmy note on this wine it almost has a plastic smell and taste. Very similar to my last tasting note on this wine. Thank goodness this is my last bottle and I won't buy this vintage of VV Bachelet again. The ironic part is that this producer makes one of my favorite VV Gevery wines, just not in 2011.

  • 2003 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

Tasted blind. Touch of soy on the nose and reductive black and red fruit on the finish. The finish is better than the nose, but this might be an off bottle, or it is on the evolutionary downslope.

  • 2021 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Ka-Boom!!! An end of night pop n pour in your face palate lifter. Holy Smokes this is awesome, even at such a young age. A high-class Cote-Rotie that will only get better with time in the cellar, but very difficult to resist. My only regret was it could have handled a 2 hour decant.
