Introduction

Visited Nicolas for the last time before the change of ownership at the end of the month, sad to see such an institution close. Two superb before I enter reservist for two weeks to serve the nation..

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert Blanc 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

Consistent with previous impressions. Rich yet incisive and vibrant citrus fruit. Well-judged acidity with some slight bitterness on the finish. Lovely texture, probably the best CdN white?

  • 2016 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Smoky, spicy nose but was possibly influenced by cigar smoke nearby.. On first tasting, it was approachable but somewhat muted and simpler than expected. Agree with Dibbs' observation that there may have been a mismatch between the relatively light extraction and the level of oak, definitely less concentrated than the previous generation of Malconsorts. Became more recognisably Cathiard with air with rich, supple dark cherry fruit and the slightest hint of sweetness. Perhaps still slightly lacking the depth and authority of earlier vintages but time will tell if this will age the same way.
