Introduction

On a stupid frigid night (-20 with -46WC), six of us gathered at Porzana for a night of revelry (DM, JG, JV/MV, BB, KB). The wines brought a mix of Champagne, White Burgs, Barolo, and an old Napa Cab; all of which treated us all very nicely indeed. The food at Pozana, and Ian our server, did not disappoint. I think our one Porzana virgin on the night was pretty impressed. Thanks all, it was worth braving the cold.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2017 Louise Brison Champagne Rosé de la Côte des Bar 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Medium salmon color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. This quite fruit forward with raspberry and cherry notes, brisk, bread dough, chalk, blood orange, and a nice spice signature. This had plenty of fruit to carry the lack of dosage. Very nice.

  • 2017 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale green-gold color. Drank aglass over an hour. Excellent, focused, nice purity, classically styled Chablis, Meyer lemon, tangerine, amazing freshness, lemon wax, oyster shell and a touch of lacquer. Long and bright. Loved this. 93+(+)pts.

  • 2010 Domaine Mazilly Pere & Fils Meursault Les Meurgers 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Limestone, fennel, ocean brine, fresh lemon and lean, brisk and medium plus bodied. A leaner version of Meursault, actually more reminiscent of Chablis tonight.

  • 2008 Oddero Barbaresco Gallina 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Medium-dark red color. Double decanted for 45 minutes. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. There's a surprisingly sparse number of notes on this. I had this a long time ago, back in 2015. Tonight's bottle had a little more reducation than I wanted. Powdery cherry and plum, iodine, black pepper, shellac, vitamins, oak, nice texture.

  • 1998 Fontanafredda Barolo Paiagallo La Villa 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium-dark red color. Double decanted for 75 minutes. Drank a glass plus over 90 minutes.
Now this was in a really nice place. Dusty nose, dried flowers, cherry, tar, gravel, leather and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is elegant, fine grained and relaxed tannins, a little damp earth, medium bodiy, pretty and delicate spice notes, dried straberry, bay leaf, cherry, soft, dusty finish. Only other bottle I had was back in 2015; another decade didn't hurt - glad I waited, :).

  • 1994 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over an hour or so. Cool on the nose and palate, mint, cassis and tobacco leaf; very plush on the palate, pretty cassis and boysenberry, a touch of funk, full bodied, velvety texture. Very good. Not as absolutely killer a bottle as a few years ago, but damn good. 93+pts.
