Flight 1 - 88/90 (4 Notes)

Flight 2 - 2004 (5 Notes)

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Gorgeous nose of smoky orchard fruit. More dialed in and seamless than the rambunctious P2 side by side. At peak.

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Like the 04 side-by-side but with more fullness and so much more intensity. Powerful palate with driving energy and excellent length. Just not totally seamless yet. Plenty of upside from here.

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Yum, great aromas of cherry, toasted brioche and strawberry cream. A big powerful palate yet also pretty and refined. At peak, as it has been for 7 or 8 years now. Favorite of the 04 Doms.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 160eme 92 Points

    France, Champagne

A more modest nose here. Palate has good, generous fruit with plenty of freshness. Just a tad less concentration and power than the 04 Vintage Krug side by side.

  • 2004 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Full nose of toasty pure orchard fruit with biscuit notes. More of everything - concentration, power, energy - relative to 160 side-by-side.

Flight 3 - 2002 (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Nose has a good mix of fresh and maturing fruit - though its pure without any earthiness. The palate however is all exuberant youthful fruit with a delicious interplay of smoke, toast and creamy fruit.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Super expressive and enticing nose of cream, smoky orchard fruits. Palate is big, bold and rich with terrific concentration and energy. Outstanding Champagne in an early peak window.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 158eme 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Aromas of brioche and some toast laced into orchard fruits. Drinking deliciously with creamy and bright fruit. At peak.

  • 2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

    France, Champagne

Similar to a bottle last month, this is closed and flat. I get the sense the fruit is trying to open up but alas this tight and restrained.

Flight 4 - 2006 (3 Notes)

Flight 5 - 2008 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Continues to be an exceptional Champagne. Big, bold and electric. Love the combination of concentration, depth and nuance all at once. Early peak and so darn good.

  • 2008 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Similar to the 08 Dom, this is big, bold and rich though it shows a touch of oxidation and more evolution which brings complexity but a tad less brightness. Early peak drinking and maybe even a bit shut down.

Flight 6 - 2008 CSJ (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Forward enticing aromatics of sweet black cherry with meat spice and wood that is overt but integrated. Palate has plush, concentrated black cherry to start and then some elevated acidity that suppresses the fruit in the finish. Enough fruit here to keep aging with perhaps some upside.

  • 2008 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Initially the nose is brooding but with time in the glass, red cherry, spice and meaty notes emerge. The fruit is round, plush and concentrated but also awash in acidity that isn't yet full integrated and creates a slightly dry and clipped finish. Like the Esmonin, I think theres enough fruit here to continue aging and allowing the structure to integrate.

  • 2008 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

A more complete and balanced wine than the Clair and Esmonin. Nose has riper and more red cherry fruit with meaty notes that intensify with time. Super round fruit laced with spice and meat. Acidity is high but juicy and well in check.

  • 2008 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Unfortunately not a sound bottle. It was lighter, pale red in appearance and the fruit was quite strawberry and with a bit of time clearly showed oxidized. And a subsequent Fourrier 08 Les Golouts was far more concentrated and vibrant, confirming something was off here.

  • 2008 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Poised, big confident nose of black cherry, spice, meat spice and some oak toast. The most concentrated and dense of the five 08 CSJs with great fruit purity and so much spice and meat in the long finish. Acidity is very well managed and integrated. Upside from here.

Flight 7 - Bonus 2008 Gevrey (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots Vieille Vigne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Bright red cherry with spice and meatiness. Fruit is round, plush and juicy with well-integrated acidity. Delicious and showed well relative to the full 08 CSJ flight just before.

  • 2008 Claude Dugat Griotte-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

The most baritone and black fruited of the 08 Gevereys tonight and also the most concentrated by a good amount. Some modest earthy funk that adds nuance to the meat and spice notes. Acidity is integrated and very well balanced with the fruit. At peak.
