  Tasted blind. Beastly. brooding fruit, dark and tannic. A rough rider.

• 2006 Vietti Barolo Brunate

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind next to the Rocche and Lazzarito. The Brunate is more similar to the Rocche. Rustic, dark fruit, rough tannin. The Lazzarito is the best of the three in my opinion.

• 2006 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind next to the Rocche and Brunate. The Lazzarito is the best of the bunch. It has lifted and lighter red fruit vs. the dark brooding fruit of the other two. Softer tannin and more approachable. The prettiest of the three offerings.

• 2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Bright red fruit, easy drinking, light on its feet with good acidity. A touch slurpy but really drinking great now.

• 2010 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Tasted blind. Might this be a bad bottle? This smelled over the hill, but it tastes better than it smells. Touch of raisin, brown sugar, and soy. Not what I would have expected from this producer or this vintage.

• 1998 Château L'Evangile

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

  Tasted blind. Wow! Knockout nose. Black color, little stanky on the nose, but it is plush with a touch of iron on the backend. A brilliant and rich wine. Love it!

• 2016 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. Younger and more tannin than the other Nebbiolo wines that came before it. However, the bright red and fresher fruit character and concentration powers through the tannin leaving a long lingering finish.

• 2010 Quilceda Creek Palengat Red Wine

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

  Tasted blind. Definitely new world and very fruit forward wine that needs a big fat ribeye to pair with it. However, this was drinking better than I was expecting and less over the top than most Quilceda Creek wines which typically have a medicinal and cough syrup like finish. This wine was more in balance.

• 2011 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Tasted blind. Exotic nose with baking spices, but still very Italian and structured. Darker color suggested Sangiovese over Nebbiolo, but I could have gone either way with it.

• 2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tasted blind. Reddish fruit with great acidity and purity. Touch of spice on the finish. Structured, but the fruit carries through the tannin. A very nice wine!

• 2000 Château La Conseillante

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

  Tasted blind. I thought it was left bank, but that due to its leaner style and herbal green finish, I called it St. Julien, 1995 Leoville Las Cases. Much to my surprise, Pomerol. Humbling!

• 2010 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

  Tasted side by side with the Grivot NSG Ronciere. Both wines were drinking great, but the Grivot was 'showing out' more due to its typical exuberant style and sappy character. The Bouley Clos des Chenes was a bit more restrained and less exotic, but it had wonderful acidity and character. If I had to do it over again, I would drink the Grivot now and age the Bouley another 3-5 years.

• 2015 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Tasted side by side with the Bouley Clos des Chenes. Both wines were drinking great, but the Grivot was 'showing out' more due to its typical exuberant style and sappy character. The Bouley Clos des Chenes was a bit more restrained and less exotic, but it had wonderful acidity and character. If I had to do it over again, I would drink the Grivot now and age the Bouley another 3-5 years.
