2025 New Year's Day Double Blind Tasting

Introduction

Ringing in the New Year in style with some great wine with friends with our annual New Year's double blind tasting event.

  • 2008 Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

    Tasted double blind. My initial thought was this was an '07 Ridge Monte Bello due to what I thought was the presence of refined and sweet Cabernet fruit with an intoxicating nose and touch of alcohol on the finish. However, upon further review with the high acidity and fierce backend with prickly tannin, I changed my opinion to a high end Spanish Tempranillo like Vega Unico. Clearly I was wrong, but my conclusion is that this wine is a good one to open if you want to throw off discerning palates.

  • 2004 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

    Tasted double blind. Drinking nicely now. Green stem character, orange rind, burnt orange rim, little sweet cinnamon spice on the finish. I called the wine '06 Clos des Lambrays.

  • 1999 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    Tasted double blind. Incredible nose. Presence of iron, beefy, meaty, black olive, touch of funk on the nose and pepper on the slightly lean finish. On the nose, I thought it was left bank Bordeaux, but on the finish, it was classic N. Rhone. Once it was revealed, it made sense what it was. Drinking great now.

  • 1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted double blind. Wonderful left bank Bordeaux nose. Cedar, iron, graphite, black & red currant, finish is feminine & youthful, but long. Just now developing subtle tertiary notes. Having tasted this wine at least a dozen times, this was the most youthful early maturity version that I've tasted. This bottle must have been stored perfectly over the years.

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted double blind. Fully mature. Nice nose. Spicey, black olive, round tannin, tobacco, long finish. Very nice!

  • 2006 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Tasted double blind. Incredible nose. One of the better Nebbiolo noses that I've experienced. A massive wine with fierce tannin, but the fruit powers through the tannin.

  • 2010 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    Tasted double blind. Intoxicating nose. High acid. High toned red fruit, minerals, truffle, elegant, with a fine nobility. A wine for kings and queens. Clearly WOTN. I thought it was 2010 vintage. Once the wine was revealed, having had the 2010 Mugneret Richebourg in November, I believe the 2009 is more approachable now and the 2010 needs to rest in the cellar longer. Both are delicious, however!

  • 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted blind. Of all the Bordeaux consumed tonight, this was the MOST YOUTHFUL. I thought it was '00 vintage left bank. It was the fattest of the three with a powerful nose, loads of black fruit, dusty tannin, touch of dark chocolate. This needs at least another decade to evolve. I thought it could have been a Sassicaia and was disappointed when I learned it was my bottle of Lafite.
